In the process of one of the projects I am working on, I have been paying around with some things. One is a new piece of kit from Exotac called a tinderZIP. They are zipper pulls made from fire cord that work pretty well. It was good to see more color today as the forest comes back to life.

You need to cut the ends anyway, so if I were in a hurry I would just cut the pull tab off...but you lose about a half inch of fire cord. Still worked well under dry conditions though.

One strike from a new rod, I'm happy with it so far.

Beautiful pictures. The blade is gorgeous. Tell me something about the brass in the first pic please. Fire piston? If so, can you tell me about it? I've never used one.

Thanks Tony, this Desert Ironwood handle is gorgeous. I wish it were tapered 5/32 like the one in the sale thread though.

The brass is a K&M match case I keep in my sheath.

I like it too. I love the asymmetry of the colors in the one in this weeks thread, and that it is tapered 5/32. If I had the money I would buy it too :D

Well.... not much I can say about that KEB. My jaw hits the floor every time I see it. Stunning pics and will be trying the product out, hopefully soon.

Thanks Abe :) My jaw about dropped when I got it back at the end of the year. It seemed the right knife to complement some nice spring colors :D

I know they are headed to their distributors in the U.K. . Do you know if there is an Exotac dealer in Oz? They have an "F" word on the package that gives me concerns with shipping them anywhere as an individual.

Lol there are a few here in Australia. I will keep an eye out when they have it in stock.

The "F" word would only give Australian customs a laugh. They would probably clear it on priority basis :)

Cool. Man they have grown well since I first met Rob back in 2009. I'm glad to see that. He is a great guy and they make great quality products.

Lol, here I would end up on a list or something... :)

I am going to have to invest in some of those for my packs. Looks like they are rebuildable should you need to burn up the cordage?

That ironwood is outstanding!

Rebuildable a few times I imagine. I have been playing with them a good bit. I have taken them apart to put on my maxped gear, and then taken them apart again to burn and was still able to use the caps to make a new pull. This was just some photos from the first time of trying them out. I will be putting a more in-depth review up in the W&SS section soon with better photos, and more of the ironwood :) I agree, it does have outstanding figure.

Cool stuff Brian. In a world dominated by one high tech electronic gizmo after another, it is amazing the joy we can find in something as simple as a new fire starting product. It seems like a no-brainer to have a few of these on your pack, clothes, or pouch for the "just in case" scenario that may come up when off the beaten path.

Congratulations on the beautiful KEB too.

Phil

The tinder Zip looks pretty handy, but I dig that KEB! Great pics! Thanks for sharing.:)

Man, I love your pictures my friend.

Thanks Phil. Yeah I have to have a lot of high tech electronics in my work, but I love simple innovations. I like these because they aren't made out of the 550 fire cord with the extra stands that could serve very little if any purpose in the field, so they are smaller and have less waste. less chance to litter. They are simple zipper pulls until needed as tinder and then if needed you can tie the outer shell back through the zipper on the single zippers one ones that are really a pain without a pull. The ends can be melted using a burning or embering end of a small twig from the fire. I like the orange ones best for my gear because they stand out and remind me and my daughter they have a secondary purpose if something happens while we are out.

Cool, as always Brian. I was wondering how you would get the ends melted with out starting a fire! :)

Is that striker the gunmetal and just looks blue because of lighting, or did they anodize a special color for you?

Thanks man! Well...I have been bugging Rob for two things fairly regularly for nearly five years...something in blue for my wife who loves blue gear, and a Ti nano XL for me. Apparently Ti nano XLs are about to be available on the website, as I recently received two blue Ti nano XLs :)

How waterproof is the string tender?

How waterproof is the string tender?

I am told that it is water resistant and just needs to be wiped off before igniting. I will know more about this when I get back in today. Rained all day yesterday, and showers this morning :)
