A printer, please

Looking for a printer. Nothing fancy, simple, solid performance without the #$%@! proprietary ink cartridges of the Dell multi-purpose/do-everything (but nothing well) pos printer that came with my computer. I looked, but was overwhelmed at an office supply store. Thanks all.

I gave up on ink printers and bought an HP Laserjet. The Black and White only ones are a great value, VERY RELIABLE, VERY DEPENDABLE, and trouble free. A good one runs about $250 and will last a long time.

If you don't need color. I would get an entry level HP laser printer. We have a HP 1012 [since replaced by HP with a new model] and it's like the Honda Civic of printers. It goes and goes and goes. I have it on a wi-fi network and it literally never fails [it's on 24/7/365]. Laser printer cartridges are pricey, but they last a looooooong time. We probably print 2-3 sheets a day [average] and the last time this cartridge was replaced was 2007 or so. If you want to print photos etc. you're better off uploading them to a drug store or photo center.

Ink jet printers offer much better resolution, but you have to use expensive paper and the cartridges are expensive. I also have a high-end EPSON ink jet [2200] and the seven cartridges are $16/ea. Plus the cost of media. It's rarely used. It was purchased for professional work. It's a very expensive printer to run. The laser printer above does 99% of our day to day printing.

I use Staples branded paper (the cheap stuff) in my HP P1006 (the model that the P1012 replaced) and the documents look great. I would say that the better paper you use, the better the documents will look. It's a great printr for under $150.

I had the same problem.

I have a tiny printer, an HP deskjet 1600.

The only button it has turns it on. Pure functionality, not one bell or whistle.

+1 some kind of laser printer. I've got an old Okidata Pageprinter that's still running strong after 12 years.

What is an alternative to color printers? We print color docs, no pictures. We hate spending all the $on ink. We currently have an HP 5 in 1, and we are getting paper jam and ink issue error messages. We got 8 years out of it, but time to replace. Ilike the idea of a laser printer, but the cost of a color one might scare me.

Reliable and simple are my 2 requirements.....nothing too fancy.
