I have been looking for a high class Instrument makers style of plain lathe, this one in the "Lorch Archives" is described as a "Toolroom precision lathe". My childhood was spent on an English "Excell" plain lathe. All this "is it screwcutting" is a lot of (CENSORED) i reckon you might use screwcutting about once every 2-3 years.
Regards Paul.
PS Using the traversing on a screw cutter is useful.

Take a look at Micro-Mark, www.micromark.com. They sell a really nice small lathe and milling machine. The lathe is 14 inches between centers and swing is 7 inches, chuck capacity 2.75 inches, spindle speeds variable from 100 to 3,000 rpm. Weight without accessories about 90 lb. Price about $640. BTW, they also list MANY tools that would be valuable for knife makers.

Hi,

A lathe that cannot cut screws is like a dull knife. No where near as useful as it should be. But everyone's mileage does vary.

Otherwise it reminds me of a Hardinge. A really nice beefy saddle and cross-slide too. Should handle some heavy cuts with perfect aplomb. Only thing I didn't like, looking at the ad, was there are no clear photos of the ways. No good way to tell how much wear there is. Still, the price seems good from a Yankee view if all the tooling came with it. Did you buy It?
