Hi,I would like to know when to do the final file work on a knife I am making (before heat treating ,afterheat treating) and what I should do to make it look a bit better.
Thank you
Richard

I hope this is the right place for this question.

Not a bad place to ask, but you would probably have better luck over in the maker's area...maybe toolshed.

Any fancy work has to be done after the last heating session because as you may notice the heating causes oxidation and it doesn't exactly look very pretty, so you could file the blade first but polish it up last. I would file first because it should be easier.

My advice: Do all the FILE work before heat treating, and get it to the exact shape you want. Before HT I wouldnt worry at all about finish, but at least get it smooth. HT will give you a good layer of oxide scale to sand off so its pointless trying to get a finish before the HT. After HT it will be difficult of not impossible to file, depending on the hardness, and thats why I say get it as close to final shape as possible.

Another tip, as I have been advised on this forum... dont grind the final bevel before HT as the very thin edge will respond very differently to the rest of the knife.

Good luck. Nice looking knife shape there.

Lots of times filework will look better with crisp edges, looks like you may be buffing too much.

Yes I can see that now,I will flatten it after the heat treat and see how it comes out.
I am using some Jabrock for the scales and its showing a nice pattern so far. This picture was taken out side in the sun and it sure shows up the parts that still need work. The pins are still loose and I will be using a 3/8 tube for the lanyard hole.
