A question about files

It's Milano's. On HWY 4 one block west of I-5 across the street from Taco Bell on the left. The hardware store is the eastern most building. The place is fun to just wander around sometimes! The even carry some decent pocket knives. They don't carry any tool steels though, Modesto steel is the closest retailer with it in stock.

I think i will go for some magicuts from jantz and spend the rest on starting a forge. i am making probably about 3 or 4 knives a year, and so a belt sander seems to be a tool that i should get after i get a forge up and running.

ETA: how many knives do you think i could reasonably make with one good quality file, for example a 12 inch magicut? i would prefer to buy as many as would be needed for a few knives so that i would not have to pay a lot of shipping.

Good quality files, and properly annealed steel along with maintenance your files should last years. Plan on getting a file card for cleaning as well as a box of chalk. Chalk isn't anything special, kids sidewalk chalk works great. Rub the chalk into the teeth of the file and it will help it from getting clogged, the card is for cleaning which should be done often during use. Don't forget to brush up on technique and get a good handle as well.
