A question about house axes

There are two eye sizes in the hatchet handles. And some times they are both marked scout axe. The handle that "house handles" sells as a house axe is full size eye. Might be a good canidate for a hardened poll or light fallers axe.

Here are the single bit eyes for comparison.

Left to right, full size, boys axe, hatchet(scout) and scout.

Not much of a leap from boys axe to hatchet.

I think of a house axe as a two pound axe on a 19 inch handle, or there abouts. A miners axe is a full size head on a short 20-24 inch handle.

In these parts a chain saw axe is another name for an undercutter axe.

So many of the "official" miners axe's I've seen have had a hardened poll and I'd just assumed that this was part of the definition; a short axe (for swinging in a mine shaft) with a hardened poll for use in trimming and pounding in beams for shoring up the shaft.

A house axe also has the same size eye as a boys axe.

A miner's axe traditionally had a hardened poll. Generically there were called 'construction axes' though the mines are one place they were commonly used.

House axe is on page 3. Construction axes on page 5.

Good point on the under cutter being called a chain saw axe.

The Plumb house axe is what comes to mind when I think of a house axe.

Its a little odd to me that House Handles makes there house axe handle a full size eye.

To further complicate things them construction axes are in the rafting axe pattern, the GB is called a rafting axe the others construction axes. Lots of confusion based on how the manufactures wanted to market there axes.

Maybe a Dayton style axe on a short handle with a hardened poll is a miners axe?

Looking at how the current manufacturers are marketing them...

The "house axe" handles from Tennessee Hickory Products are 19" and listed as fitting 2-1/4 pound heads.

Council Tool currently has several models of what they call a "miner's axe".
3.5# Jersey on either a 20" or 26" straight haft; and
3.5# Dayton on either a 20" or 26" straight haft; and
4# Dayton on a 20" straight haft.

The miner's axe made by Barco has a 3.5# Dayton head on a 20" straight haft.
Barco sells a replacement "house axe" handle that's 19" and for a 2-1/4# head.

Do-It-Best sells house axe handles sized for a boys axe eye. I think they're made by Link.
