Another reason is hunting season. Hunters in the woods move deer...right out into traffic...away from heavily hunted areas to less hunted areas...
Interesting. Here in the Mid-South, most deer are hit on the highway between sunset and sunrise when there are no hunters in the woods. Mating patterns seem to be a bigger influencing factor. We have no winter kill, and predators are few and far between. According to our state DNR, if we hunt all zones, all seasons and methods, all bonus hunts, we can harvest two bucks, and over three hundred does each. Noone does, but I put enough venison in the freezer to eat it year round, except for the jerky which goes pretty quick.
