I am building a few fighter type knives and they are all getting mortise tangs, I am interested in making the next few with a soild handle. What is the smallest you would personally make the tang on a fighter. The blades are 9 inches, 3/16 thick, 1 and a half inch wide. I am trying to figure out a way to just drill and place my tang inside the hole so I wont have to worry about the mortise lines matching up., but I dont know the basics of tang size? I really appreciate everyones help, Thanks Charlie

Make it the same size as you're making it for your mortise tangs. Then you can trace the tang on the side of your block and angle your block in your drill press to follow the outside line from the top and bottom of the tang. Then go back in and clean out the center to fit your tang in.

Also, round the fop and bottom of your tang to about the radius of your drill bit, then you don't need to make square corners in a blind hole to make the tang fit.
