A Question For Jerry.

Jerry,

Perhaps this question has been asked before (in which case - please forgive me) but I must ask.

Is there any possibility that Busse could in the future employ sheath makers on a semi / full time basis to provide customers with the option of selecting a "factory" sheath which would be made along with the new knife and shipped out with it?

Thank you and all the best in the new year.

Good question. . . .We are working on that very idea as we speak!

Sweet, That would be nice, The choice between leather cordura and kydex.
Or to start with whichever one is in higher demand. I love the leather sheaths from Chris Reeve Knives, top notch.

I too like this idea very much. From what I gather there are a bunch of super-talented makers out there. I've been very impressed with what I've seen (not yet handled) from all the Busse recommended sheathmakers. I hope to do some business with one or two of them soon. That said having the option to order directly when the knife is purchased would be a major score.

It is a hassell to buy a Busse then try to find a sheathmaker who can deliver within a reasonable amount of time. Please Jerry, I too would like to be able to buy your blades with the sheath. Hope something comes of this suggestion - thanks a bunch.

I vote yes also. I know at one point you'd mentioned you'd rather give folks a chance to order the sheath they want rather than charge them for a sheath they won't use, but for user knives, a sheath is mandatory and having a couple choices would make this a terrific option.

My vote...... Worst Thread Ever!!!! :p

I might have invested in my production line too soon.

Dont do it Jerry!!! My wallet is begging you!!!! :o

It would be hard to find better sheath makers than those that are on the website already. :D

I'd submit Looper Leather!

I know ya'll probably haven't heard of them, but I can say with certainty they are a large manufacturer that make leather product for some large companies.

They mostly handle large volume runs.....Busse would be PERFECT!

I understand and agree with your point BUT.... What if you could choose certain sheaths from the makers you currently deal with that would arrive _with_ your knife rather than waiting for your knife, then having to send it away for pants?? Seems better (to me). 2-3 popular carry options, a few leather, a kydex and a kydex in leather... And if you don't want one of those, don't include one, and go to them directly for your preference like you would now.... Where's the downside?? Two MORE weeks?? I'm in!

I'm all for this idea too! I bought my CGFBM as a user, and I can't take her anywhere. She can't go out wit' no pants! Don't worry none leatherman, even is she had come with a sheath, I'd still be on the list for a dangler. I do wish that it had come with some kind of sheath though. I might hurt myself with the mexican carry.:D

The downside is how to predict which way people will prefer. Lets say Jerry makes 1000 GBKs (Generic Busse Knife). How many sheaths of each type should he order? Unless you are proposing that the knife goes from Jerry directly to the sheath maker and then comes to you? Might take longer to arrive, but it is ready to go when it does.

If you work it right, I bet you could see every blade Busse produces a month or more before they ship out to the rest of us. I mean... you leather crafters need a good working model to work your magic right? :D Jerry would understand that you need access to his entire lineup!

This is a no-brainer, please send sheaths with knives like everone else.
Then again, that's just my opinion. I will buy them either way.

I havent been to impressed with the sheaths that came with the knives in the past. Id rather order them and get a better sheath. My suggestion would be make sure the sheath makers get a knife first so one would not have to wait to order a sheath. Make the knife a loaner to the sheath maker if Busse had too.

Yeah, aside from the few knives I deem "kydex needy," my money will be going to Dwayne. Lots of bang for the buck...

Simple. Order the sheath at the same time you order the knife. By the time two weeks rolls around in Busse time, you get both products about the same time. Of course, you do need to order from a maker who's going to receive a pattern knife.

The only problem I see here is getting the blade patterns in enough time to get the sheaths done in advance. For the sheath to arrive with the blade, a blade has to be sent to the maker with enough lead time to allow for the manufacture. The reason I dont have production leather for the knives ready to go is that I dont get knives ahead of time, I'm still waiting on the Battle Mistress.
Given enough lead time I could have several dozen production sheaths ready to ship when the knives started to ship, that way you would have knife and sheath at the same time, theoretically.
I'm sure this goes the same for every manufacturer on the "Busse Approved List"
A good example of something that works well is the Company Store Game Warden Sheaths, and the Swamp Rat Company Store. Interested sheathmakers get the knives quickly, most knives can be shipped with sheaths.
The key here is the patterns getting to the maker quickly. Quick enough so that the sheaths arrive either with the knife or shortly thereafter.
I dont mind the customer sending his knife in as a pattern, but by then I cant promise quick delivery of the production line.

You have the key in hand bro! Getting the knives even as little as a week ahead of release would give enough time to manufacture a good number of sheaths.
