Hello, I just recently placed an order with Kit Carson for a large model #4. I am having a difficult time choosing a handle material for the model 4. Does anybody have one with the standard G10 handle material? Does the G10 that Kit uses provide a good grip? Also, I like jig bone. Would the jig bone be too slippery for a knife this large? Your opinions and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Big D1

ive got one of the medium model 4's...but micarta scales,so i cant say anything about g10 or what have you.
the micarta,IMHO, provides a fairly good grip, unless youve got very oily hands...

now on other knives, like my AFCK, the g10 provides an excellent grip.i spent about hbalf an hour yesterday using it to break the thick layer of ice on my car (didnt scratch it up,either :)).

if g10 is what you want, then go for it,youll be very happy with your carson.

I don't think it's possible to get a knife from Kit Carson that you will not be very pleased with. I have a Medium M4 also, no G10 just Stellite & Stag, (I'd show a pic but MO has insistted I stop showing it). Why aren't you talking to Kit about this, he's not that hard to get a hold of? Let him know what you're looking for and your concerns. Trust me, he knows how to make the knife you want.

:)
phil, you remember the stag and damascus m4 he had at the show?
ive been kicking myself for not buying it since then..... wish i had bellied up to the bar and dropped the 800 hundred (IIRC) he wanted fer it...

Is that what he was going to charge you?
Bwahahahahahaha

Hello all. Thanks for your opinions. I have been in contact with Kit, but I just like to get opinions from owners of Carson knives. This will probably be a once in a life time purchase for me, so I want to get it right the first time. At the moment, I am kind of leaning toward presentation grade ironwood as handle material. Big D1

Like the posts above. . .no matter what the scale material is. . .you can't go wrong with a knife from Kit ! :D

I do have a knive in "polished" G-10 (sorry. . .not a Carson) and it's very cool ! Takes a beating, doesn't show wear like one would expect and is very "slip resistant."

But, "presentation grade ironwood" for handle material. . .dude, you've got my vote ! :D

Should we tell him now, boys--or let him figure it out on his own?

Actually, I have found it pretty difficult to get a hold of Kit, I still have not received an email from him. But that aside, you will be happy with whatever Carson that you get. They rock, the ones that I have played with/owne(d) have all have micarta handles or titanium handles, so I don't have experience with the G-10, but for what needed, the micarta was nice, good grip and look. How long are you going to have to wait for your M4?

Will, please do not tell me. If you do, I will never have any bass boat money.

mmtmatrix, try this email address for Kit. kcknives@bbtel.com That is the address that I have been emailing and getting responses from Kit. My wait will be just shy of two years, so I will have plenty of time to make up my mind, and change my order. Big D1

D1,

I have a Model 4 with G-10 scales and it is plenty grippy- even when wet.

I also have one in jig bone and one with a milled titanium handle. Both of these are fine knives, but they are slippery when wet.

Ironwood makes a great scale and it gets sticky when wet. Have you considered what type of steel and style of the blade and what size?

So many choices- since you are ordering now- order more than one! I guarantee that you will want additional ones after you receive it! :D

Daniel

I have a large model 4 clip point from Kit. It has G-10 scales and is bead blasted thruout. The grip is really good even when wet.

I am also in agreement with everyone else. You won't be disappointed with any of Kit's knives.

Hiya BigD..., as mentioned many times.., the G-10 does provide a very nice gripping surface on Kit's knives..(and most knives in general actually). Ohhhhhhhh....the high grade Ironwood sounds so nice!!

I'm assuming since you said "Once in a Lifetime Purchase"....the you are going to use it heavily.., so I might lean towards the G-10, but boy that ironwood sounds good!!

No need to say I hope you enjoy the knife..., you will!

Got a couple of Carson M4s with green/black G10 and one with micarta handles. Either works well for handling with wet or dry hands and mild scratches don't show up. Mechanically, all of mine have been flawless - the best buys I ever made in custom folders.

Kit a nice guy? Bwahahaha. Guess you havent been to the chatroom. :D
On the other hand D1, I got my once in a lifetime model 4 a couple of years ago, have now had about 6 once in a lifetime Carson model 4's. Bass boat? Ha! You better start thinking rubber blow up raft cause you aint gonna have any money for a boat once you get that baby. Kit puts some kind of aura or something into them that makes you keep wanting more.
All kidding aside, he's a super guy, and his knives are all of extreme quality. Every one has super lockup and they are smooth. For a user the ironwood sounds good or check out some linen micarta.

Dave

Lifters right, they are of extreme quality and an excellent value.

Here's a tease for ya,Big D

Why on Earth would anyone want one with bone scales?

Oh yeah...Now I remember...

His stuff is JUNK! I wouldn't buy a Carson custom if it was the last knife on earth. The factory collaborations are better than his handmade stuff in a heartbeat! Wait a minute! I have several of his handmades and now that I've checked them out, they look okay. Naw, I'd go with factory stuff!
