A question for Sal re: the Civilian

I recently had a customer ask for a plain edged Civilian. I told him a plain edge Civilian was never cataloged, but he swore he'd seen one. I'd been away from the biz for about three years before my most recent stint (I'm leaving again soon, but that's another story), so I told him if it existed, he better find one to buy, because I still don't believe it. Did Spyderco make a plain edge Civilian? If so, how many? And most importantly to me, Whatever for?

Can I answer? This has come up before. Spyderco did make aluminum-handled plain-edge Civilains - they have said about 300. I believe they bear both the GIN-1 and G-2 markings, because a friend has one marked GIN-1 and I recall seeing them before the desiganation was changed. They have not made any with G-10 handles or ATS-55 blades unless I am mistaken. What you told your customer was correct - if you see a plain-edged Civie, snap it up!

My plain-edge Civilian has the G-2 steel marking. So it must be true that they bear both designations.

Thanks for the info-I knew if they existed then somebody here would have one. Still doesn't answer this: what the hell for? It's not like this is a utility folder that'll be cutting up packing tape all day. If I got jacked by some slug wearing a leather jacket, I'd take the serrated blade hands down, cuz that plain edge ain't going through it. To those of you who have them, Congradulations on a very rare knife indeed! If you choose to sell them, I hope you get top dollar and then some. Somebody's bound to want it more than you, so take that money and run.

Haji - the market for the plain edge version was too small, for the reasons you mention. The customer base for this version was using them in the garden and for cutting rolls of film (the shape).

Drew - thanx.

And here I was, thinking it was a law enforcement backup weapon. Next time I get an annoying customer asking about it, I'll pass that on. Should be good for a laugh. Film and flowers, huh? Never woulda thought of that...Is the number of 300 correct? That's pretty limited. I still don't really want one, but if there's only 300, maybe I'll grab one.

Haji - don't remember the qty. If Susan told Danelle it was 300, then that's probably accurate.
