A copy of an email I received this morning:

I've been trying to locate a knife that I had only seen once at a gun
show. It was a Russian make projectile knife. It was spring loaded in
the handle, not the entire blade, with a heavy duty spring. The blade
would shoot from the handle with the press of a button by use of the
thumb. I was told it was accurate within 20-30 ft. I'm trying to find
one to add to my collection, do you know anything or have any
information on this knife?
Anyone?

All I know is that you are talking about a "ballistic knife" and it is illegal to carry in Massachusetts and likely many other states. If this person is a collector, that's probably not an issue, but in case they are unaware, I thought I'd mention it.

You can see one of these knives in the old Schwartzenegger film "Commando." They're basically very dangerous junk... but "unique."

Right you are Corduroy. I recall someone selling them by catalog several years ago and also someone selling the handle mechanism with the blade replaced by a small grappling hook.

This knife was offered here in Brazil about five or six years ago as "Spetsnaz Ballistic knife". It was not cheap, as I recall - about five Gerbers Mk. II.
That´s all I know about it.

Because of their controversial nature, the Feds (US) banned them in the mid-80s.

Manufacturer response was to sell them in kits (sans spring and with cute attachments like grappling hooks).

Haven't seen one on the market in awhile, but wouldn't be surprised if one shows up at eBay sonner or later.

The one I examined in their legal days had a limited range and wasn't impressive when it came to close penetration. Some folks reported somewhat better performance.

Pretty iffy practicality in my opinion, but an interesting gimmick.

The ones that you see normally are junk, but I have a vague memory of seeing one made by some Afghan POWs(or Soviet, or maybe just old soldiers) out of spare AK47 pieces. It was accurate, but about $600. Impressive though

I like my women like I like my knives: strong, sharp, well-formed and pattern-welded!

I remember one being used to good effect (it took out an especially nast bad guy) on the old "Equalizer" tv show. Of course, it was fiction, but then the ban on switchblades resulted from fiction, the movie "Blackboard Jungle".

The knives turn up at shows (Gun and Knife) from time to time. I handled one, it was a POS as most of the forumites agree.

One of the other forums wouldn't even allow a solicitation for this knife citing ATF regulations and therefore locked the thread. I guess this has been brought up before.

Thanks for the info, people...
I will email the gentleman the url for this thread. I wasn't trying to solicit purchase information, just fyi for the man who wrote the email.
I knew I could count on y'all for the information, and the mild shaming....
