A question for the Case afficionado's

My first thought was mushroom also. I would have never guessed tomahawk. The "arrowhead" shield is a bit odd looking too.

The classic oval shield is still their best, but I have to admit that the Case script shield is really cool.

I quite like the arrowhead shield; not because it's an arrowhead, but because it reminds of 1950s neon signage and advertising.

Nice looking knife, cannonball970! What pattern number is it?

The Case oval is a classic. I like it but I'm happy there's some variety. I also like the bowtie with Case in block letters. That's also a very classic shield. They used it a few years ago on smooth bone sowbellies but unfortunately I missed them. They sold pretty quick and I waited too long.

They used a number of very classic shields on the Tony Bose commemorative set. If I recall correctly, Tony chose the shields.

Their federal shield is a little too cartoony but it's pretty nice. Unfortunately they aren't pinned but I haven't lost a shield in all my years. They do an incredible job with the inlay. Very tight fitting.

Thanks Jake! I think it's actually the knife in Bob's first pick - a medium stockman 63090 SS. It had burnt salmon bone covers but it looked terrible so I dyed it.

The knife in my first pic was a Sodbuster Jr. Although your pic was one that prompted my question. I've seen these shields before but never knew what they were supposed to represent.
I do like the bow tie shield that Jake posted. As Jake mentioned about the federal shield, I find many of the Case shields "cartoony". The classic oval is the best in my opinion.

I agree with the part in Bold Bob. The classic is the best in my mind. I like it with the oval circle around CASE. I like it a little less without the circle like what's on most of the classic delrin.

Ah thanks Bob! I think I wouldn't mind that shield on a sodbuster if the bone actually looked as nice as your picture. Mine more resembled some nasty chewing gum :barf:

Yeah, some Case dye jobs really are not very attractive. It's a shame because they have some really good patterns and it seems their quality control has gotten a bit better than the recent past. Some of the color offerings really turn me off though. Your dye job came out really nice. Looks like old school Case red bone.

I really like Case knives but have to agree some of the dye on their jigged bone looks terrible. Also I think a lot of their knives would benefit from no shield at all. I know a lot of folks enjoy brightly colored acrylics I don't personally but some of their stuff with spider webs and such just don't fit a traditional look to my eye.

Thank you for posting this Bob . I've been wondering what this tugboat-looking thing is. Definitely not their most exciting shield.

From being in the Navy and on a submarine rescue ship, it looks more like a small submarine to me ;)

but I was fond of this shield they used ;

Ooo, if I ever end up with that shield again I'm going to have to dye it yellow :D
I do like that shield you posted, it has a more old school, classic look.

Haha and probably be humming an Old Beatles tune as you dye it no doubt ;)

And thanks, I thought the other one has a very classy look too.

Case has always had a few unusual colors that don't appeal to the "traditional" crowd. They do sell though, and that's the bottom line :) Even in their Case Bose line, there are some not so common colors. I have an orange jigged bone Case Bose Yukon Jack that I first bought despite the color (great gun show price) and have grown to love the knife and like the color.

I actually really like most of Case's weirder colors, it's just when the actual product looks looks nothing like the pictures you see online I get a little grumbly. This is what the burnt salmon bone was advertised as:

And this is what I received:

I guess the best thing to do would be to look over them in person if possible.

Well the upside is, you turned an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan with that dye job. Well done.:thumbup:
