A question for the hawk makers

After seeing what some of you guys can make, I got interested in making my own hawks. I figured I'd try the wrap and weld method first since the majority of guys I asked started with it before moving on to slit and drift. So my question is where do y'all get your 1018 flat stock for making hawks via the wrap and weld method? I checked fastenal but they don't have 1018 in flat stock, only square stock.

Well we get ours from a local steel yard but you can order it from www.speedymetals.com Ive used them before and they ship fast via ups. Now make sure you get 1018 instead of structural a-36. Sometimes that a-36is full of crap(literally) Its a scrap melt structural steel and 1018 welds better. Speedymetal will cut it to size, try a piece 1 1/2" wide by about 9 1/2"-10" long.
Forge your cutting bit into a "V" shape so you wont have a cold shunt. Take look at this thread, it may help..

Thanks for the reply Kentucky, I'll give em a try. I know all about the crap in A36, ask me how...

It kills me, a couple of times Ive ran across batches of a-36 that wouldent stick together for love or money :grumpy: Even go to cut it and run into "hard spots" that would make a drill bit bounce..
