A question for those into forged blades...

Well, I have emails out to Burt Foster (already responded, but I have another quick ? for him), Jon Christensen, and Bailey Bradshaw. That Foster San Mai is looking VERY nice!!!

ETA? I really like Terry Primos' knives, but again you've got to find someone willing to part with one!

You can't go wrong with that trio. Another point I will mention about Burt is that in addition to being a superb craftsman, his customer service is also absolutely top notch. Great communication and goes out of his way to make his customer happy - even cantankerous bastids like our dear STeven. :p

Roger

PS - You may also want to include Terry Primos - he has really busted it like crazy to get his backlog down and his delivery time for hunters is now actually pretty quick. Regrettably, he still only turns out bowies once in a blue moon, but I'm a patient guy. :)

Roger, thanks! I'll send an email off to Terry to see what that situation is. So far, its looking like my hunter supply might be growing in the next year or so!

Terry Primos' hunters are a great value if you can find one for sale. :)

Tap, tap, tap... is this thing on? :)

Sorry, Megalobyte, no slight intended! I hadn't realized that Terry had been working so hard to get his times down on the hunters, so when Roger explained that I got a little excited as I had actually crossed Terry off my list due to his not taking orders (the last information I had). Thanks for the reccomendation, though- you were one of the first, and deserve your due!

That's okay, I like thanking people for help/advice they give me! Its always nice when someone reminds me of a lapse in my manners :D .

spyderjon, you know there's a primos platypus hunter somewhere out there for sale....Wireedge has it listed somewhere...

The best bang for the buck in carbon or damascus hunters is from Adam Derosiers, in my opinion. he has extensive hunting experience in Alaska and his damascus is the 01/L6 blend that cuts very, wery well.

You can get Damascus for under $500 or carbon for around $325.
Nice, sturdy sheaths also.

The knives are built to MS standards by-and -large already, IMO and he just got his JS this year.

I never did stop taking orders. I'm not sure who started that one or why.

You will not be able to reach me this week -- at least until about Friday. My wife has convinced me to take some much needed time off. While I can't really financially afford to go off on a vacation, I can't physically afford not to. I just about did myself in getting the backlog down for the last year or better.

The last thing ressembling a vacation I had was in February of 2002 when Fisk came down here and stayed for a weekend. We went fishing and never went near the shop.

Like Roger mentioned, the backlog is finally down on the hunter sized knives.

Mr. Lombardo, thanks for the tip on Mr. Derosiers! I'll check him out for sure.

Mr. Primos, its a pleasure to have you on the thread. I'm not sure who started the rumor that you'd quit taking orders, it was just something I had heard. I'd be very interested to hear the turn-around on the hunters as well! Thanks!!

Oh, and Spyken thanks for the tip! I've been looking at that one for a bit, but I'm one for spending money directly with the smiths when I can. If someone's not taking orders I'll buy second-hand, but I'm thinking I'd rather give the money to a talented smith. Just a quirk of mine.

Sorry for taking so long to reply.

Best guess on my standard fares -- that being the hunter sized blades with presentation grade wood handles -- is about 1 - 2 months.

Exotic handle materials, Damascus, and large knives like big Bowies still have a long wait. The main problem is that I can make three hunter sized knives in the time it takes me to do one large Bowie, but I don't get three times the price for the Bowies. It's not just about money, but I do have to try to keep money coming in. I like to eat every now and then.
