A Question For You Leatherman Wave Owners/Users

Can any of you, who own the Leatherman Wave, please let me know how the fit is with the newer style leather sheath that they offer for this tool. I'm also curious as to the fit of the nylon sheath as well.

Why I ask this is that I currently own a Leatherman SuperTool with the old style (square-ish/boxey) leather sheath. The sheath offers, at best, a very loose fit and I just hate a loose fitting sheath!!!:( I'm thinking about also getting The Wave (with the new style leather sheath) but don't want to be disappointed again. I do, however, understand that the nylon sheath that is offered has a very snug fit and should be OK but I'm partial to leather and would prefer to go that way.

Thanks...

I like the fit of the new leather sheath, it's not so loose that it really jiggles around inside it's own sheath, but loose enough that if you pop the flap and hold it upside down it comes right out of it's own weight, meaning a smooth "draw" if you will.

If you really want a good sheath, have Blade-Tech make one for you. After getting my Wave in Nov. of 1999, I immediately knew I disliked the leather sheath. I called up Blade-Tech and within a week was the the proud owner of a, then, Concealex sheath. The sheath is much like their line of magazine "rigs". Only about one half of the Wave sticks into the sheath and is held there by friction, the very smooth portion of the Concealex is on the inside and sticks to the metal very well. There is also a Chicago style screw and rubber washer so that you can take in the slack over time. Truly top notch. Only wish I had a camera or scanner so I could take a picture for you. I guess I'll have to quit buying knives for a week so I can afford one!

I was perfectly satisfied with my leather sheath until I read Wire Edge's post.

Now I want a concealex sheath!

Hey Guys...

If your interested I'm about to do a run of Wave rigs..I can make a few more up easily...

The rigs hold the Wave in a horizontal position or Vertical position..Retention is very good, the tool is popped out of the rig with a squeeze,,then snaps easily back into place...

Theres a ton of my Wave rigs out here somewhere,,maybe someone will chime in..

Drop me a note if you are interested..

Same here...those concealex sheaths for the LM are really slick!!

Hi Raptor,

The leather sheath for my Wave fit fine initially, but within 6 months because very loose. The tool would rattle around in the sheath as I walked. Leatherman replaced it free of charge with the nylon version, which fits snugly so far (about 4-5 months so far).

Regards,

David

I'm coming up on two years (X-mas) with a WAVE in the nylon sheath, no problems yet.

I use it daily, and it's not too tight in the sheath, not too loose either.

Maybe I just got lucky.

The only complaint? I carry it flap up, and sometimes the flap will catch on my seat belt getting out of the truck...I hear the velcro rip a bit, and just press it back down.

(I'd never thought about carrying it inverted. I'll try that, and if it poses a problem I'll either go back to my usual carry, or talk with Eric...)

I had Mike Sastre at Rivercity sheaths make one for my Wave. It's great and I love it. Very small and minimalist.

Raptor,
You can also go to Home Depot and get some of their self adhesive green felt. It's used for the bottom of jewelry boxes, etc to prevent scratching tables. If you line the sheath with it, it will tighten the fit. The glue on the back of it is really good so it stays put, I have used it on alot of sheaths to prevent scratching but works good for loose sheaths too.

Raptor,

Coming back to your original post how good is the new leather sheath or Nylon sheath as compare to the original boxy type leather sheath.

Firstly i got my Wave 'bout 3 months after the initial launch which is a couple of years ago. It came with a nice leather sheath. Got my Nylon sheath about 8 months ago.

My list of comment (leather sheath) :
1. Looks good with light brown colour. Rugged.
2. Great workmanship stiching, glue and fit.
3. Loose enough to fall turn upside down but will not rattle on belt.
4. Rides a bit high on the belt ... could get in the way sometime.
5. Hard to dry and looks suffer slightly after that.
6. Button clasp .. .a bit hard to close empty

My list of comment (leather sheath) :
1. Looks good ... black .... tactical
2. Great workmanship
3. Tighter fit than the leather, do not hinder draw or keeping but will still fall when turn upside down due to the weigth of the Wave
4. Position on belt the same with the leather version.
5. Easy to dry after getting wet
6. Velcro clasp easy to close when empty

My advise ... if you get wet often (like i do) get the Nylon ... it will last you longer ... but then again the velcro clasp deteriorate faster than the button clasp. Either way finally it comes down to your individual taste in looks, both are great.

Hope it helps

I can't answer your question directly. I got the nylon, and here's why:

Leather, once it gets thoroughly wet (rain, sweat, beer, etc.), won't dry out as fast as a nylon sheath.

Nylon sheath fits tight and is not as apt to expand over time like leather.

Black nylon looks better IMHO.

If the velco bothers you, you can sew in a button clasp, or you can just replace the velcro. It would take quite a while though before the velcro gives up its grip.

lifter4Him: That's a good tip about the felt.

Get the nylon sheath that Leatherman sells. Durable , fits without
getting loose, doesn't echo ( makes no noise during carry) is very low
profile in black, is washable to keep a fresh look, is easy to repair,
and wears like iron. I like the nylon so much over the leather I bought
an extra pouch for my supertool and pulse that has a mag-light holder
to use them at work.

I picked up a wave last week.I really like the leather sheath. It is very high quality and offers a good fit.It smells really nice to.My problem was every time I carried it it felt like someone was jabbing me in the side.Last night I finally pressed out a horizontal concealex sheath.I really didnt like the look though. So I finally pressed out a belt loop out of concealex and attached it through belt loop on the leather sheath. Now I have a leather horizontal sheath and it turned out so nice even my wife was amazed.:D I have been carrying it part of last night and all of today and I can't belive how well it carries. The only problem I see is if the snap comes open it could fall out of the sheath.I really think the wave is a great tool.I want to make a habit of always carrying mine.
