So I think I'm gonna make my first knife soon. I think I understand most of what I need to do, and I have the tools. I just have one question... Where do I get the steel? I don't want some cheap Home Depot steel or something, I want 01 steel. Where do you guys buy your steel from?

Thanks, I decided to go with mcmaster. Seems like a good website :)

I have a new question now though. What kind of bolts do you guys use to attach the grips to your knives?

Seems like a lot of guys here buy from Admiral Steel, Me being in Canada I go with Knifemaker.ca. there is a place here in Winnipeg called New West Metals, but they don't have the selection of KnifeMaker

how much do you need, i have in the past bought my steel from flatground.com but lately just get it from mcmaster http://www.mcmaster.com
Its really hard to knock a company this great. you order any time of the day and in one to two days you have your steel. i ordered a huge bar of 5160 it was 3" wide and .350 thick and 6 feet long. i called them at 1AM on Monday and had the steel at the shop on Tuesday. check them out, i have been very happy with them.

For the new question--typically, makers use Corby or Loveless bolts.

Who exactly is Aldo? Iv eheard his name mentioned more than once, but Ive never managed to find the guy/place to look at his prices/selection.

Aldo can be found in the "For Sale" supplies section. Here's the link to his latest run of 1084 steel:

Just send him an email with any questions or with what you need, and he will get back with you. He's a very busy guy, so you might not get an immediate answer.

If you want a similar steel and instant gratification, check out 1080 or 1084 from one of the above suppliers or from Tracy Mickley (www.usaknifemaker.com) or Chuck Bybee (www.alphaknifesupply.com). These are smaller suppliers, and I know firsthand that Tracy has top notch customer service and a great selection. Bookmark those guys along with www.texasknife.com.

Aldo Bruno aka "The New Jersey Steel Barron". I buy all my steel from Aldo; his prices range between good and amazing, the steel is top notch, and he's a "good fella" ;) (inside joke).

You can view his current inventory at the link below. He has a good selection of O1 with unbeatable prices.

McMaster has pretty good prices on tool steel. I've bought a bunch of bars from them, but I was usually buying something else as well: Garolite, pin and tube stock, grinding belts, or quench oil. It's a good one-stop shop for a beginner like me, though more specialized dealers sometimes have better prices.
