A Question Not Often Discussed

Please excuse the error, it's been changed. The point was not that these sets were unobtainable, just hard to come by. The sets DeSotosky mentioned were on auction and I was able to obtain one but a few of those sets were in terrible shape and I want collector pieces, not scraps of what was once a twin set. DeSotosky pointed out that in 90 days, 11 sets were at auction. 11 Sets are few and far between when there is 5000 knives at auction a week. Lets break this down even farther. Me being a collector, I am looking for a one line 115 set, or a two line 117 set with bone hard fiber spacers. How often do these sets come up? Yes the sets are out there but to find specific sets that fit into what you are doing/collecting, the reality is that these sets are hard to find. Badhammer pointed out the fact that some sets may have been broken up for one reason or another. In the same breath you can say that people may peace meal the sets together as well.

In response to DM statement that the sets had different model # proir to incorporation, he's right, in '61 the 103 was called a 110 and the Twin set was called a model 210 Twin set. I believe that the 210 set was the only one offered in a catalog. I'm sure you could have requested whatever you want and Buck would have made it. Thats just the way it worked back then, it must have been nice...

Come on Matt,

Look for a real nice collector worthy twin set, a truly hard to find White Melamine set. Now that would be a set I'd love to see a nice photo of. Happy hunting;).

jb, believe me if I could find one I would snatch it up quick. Those are extremely rare. I have only just begun, but when I get my collection together I will post pictures.

Just out of curiosity How many collectors of these set do we have out there. I know DM said he had a few in his collection, and I know of one guy who has every set Buck made.

Heabbie,

Great to hear from you again, Great sets there. Is there 3 spacers in the 117 set, I cant tell from the picture.

Great knives non the less, These sets are really neat. Something about them just grabs my attention. Maybe its the double sheath. I'd like to get feedback on anybody that used these sets hunting. It seems as though it is practical but bulky, I know when I am out even a large knife such as the 119 seem like it gets in the way.

HK, Has posted photos of a early 210 Twin Set. I carry mine in seperate sheaths. I often use the 103 but substitute the second knife for a 121. DM

I would love to see those, I found a pretty exciting set of photos, I'll try to up load them...

These pictures were sent to me, so dont yell at me about the clairity. This is a one line set comprised of a 119 and a 121. Again Buck accomadating the buyer in the old days and making a custom twin set.

Yes, I was the one that took those photos w/ my phone. Those belong to a long time collector who brought that twin set to a show and I snapped the pictures and sent it around to many, Joe and Leroy included. Its a custom twin set. A one of a kind set, that Buck made for a customer. Then 2nd or 3rd generation offered it for sale and a lucky Buck collector snagged it up at a show. If you look close at this photo and then other recent photos of my display. Thats the frame of my light colored wooden display on the right and a application for the Buck Collectors Club on the left, found on my table. One cannot fault the guy for wanting these two models in a Twin Set as they will cover lots of ground for an outdoorsman. DM

Here you go. Trying to help you out in this thread. While this is not the 210 Twin Set (I'm still looking for that one) it is another very rare early Buck twin set. The Skinner is the 110 featured in the 210 Twin Set. Only paired with a model 102. Which may have been from 1960. Anyway heres the 110 Skinner and I don't remember what the model on the left was.I'm amazed HK found these. DM

DM, Well thanks for taking the pictures. It is deffinately a cool and unique set. How long ago were the pictures taken. I cant believe that this is the only one. There has to be another couple of these out there. I cant imagine that Buck knives had only one request for this knife set. I wonder how many other one of a kind set of knives are out there...

Those are assume. I love the middle set. That saw has to be extremely rare. I have never seen one before.

I would think so too. To my way of thinking the 119 and 121 would make a good twin set. Only one--- unless someones got another hidden away. DM

I first saw that twin set in 2009 and took the photos in March 2011. Fairly sure thats the correct date. DM

I just looked up in the catalog, the knife in middle left was just called a bone cutting knife and had no model #. It only shows it one time in the '57 catalog. I was curious when the 110 changed to the 103 and again from the catalog it looks like some time in '61.

Man, I'd take the 110 Skinner, the saw and 121. A Sportsman is well heeled with those three for field dressing any game. Yes, that would be correct, 1961... As thats when the model numbers we have today were established. DM

I'm a deffinate 121 fan. I have every one made, and a few extras. I really like the 119 as well, so these two knives in a set would be great.

I wrote out how many sets made up a full production collection. From 1961-'85 there are 9 of each 104, 115, and 117, totaling 27 sets. This is from the barrel nut set through the three line blade stamp with two spacers. Nothing really changed from there on out. I plan to collect at least these sets. Not to include the pre-production sets if I can get my hands on them.

Just obtaining the 3 sets w/ sheaths in three line stamp would be a good collection. In the last 10yrs. I've not seen 4 of those at shows. So, they are hard to find. For some reason people tend to hang on to them. DM
