Hey all,

I purchased a rayskin wallet at blade and now I'm concerned about using it. Does anyone of you that own one of these things know if they might demagnetize credit cards like the old eelskin wallets used to?

Thanks!

I've carried a rayskin wallet for at least three years with credit/debit cards and never had any problem at all with demagnetizing the cards.

A colleague came back from Nigeria with ratskin shoes, hair included. Great stuff.

I once had a goat scrotum skin wallet (could be faked). Stolen. Where can I get another one or the leather to have one made up?

Goat scrotums (or is that scrota? - I don't know, I usually just call them goat scrotes) are usually traded in the Pirates Cove, but you have to be at least a Basic Member to get in there.

Excellent. Thanks for the information all. I shall now go forth and use my spiffy new rayskin wallet without fear. It cost about twice what I normally spend on a wallet... but if it lasts twice as long then I'm doing okay. :) Wouldn't you know the only thing that I'd buy at the blade show was a friggin wallet?! :)

I've often been tempted by rayskin wallets at knife shows but stopped short of buying one out of the same fear that my cards would get demagnetized.
Now I'll probably get one.

The big problem with them is that they will destroy your pants.

It's like carrying a wad of sandpaper in your pants. As you move and the fabric moves back and forth over the abrasive surface, the fabric will be worn down. This is mostly a problem for people who wear their pants very tight such that the fabric of the pants will be pulled tight over their wallet.

Mine is going on 2 years of carry and all is fine.
Even got a matching slipsheath for the Tomes :D

When you rubbed the wallet--did it turn into a suitcase?? :)

That's funny. I bought one at a knife show several years ago as well. I had it replaced once because the clear internal pocket split. Happen again with the newer one, put I fixed it with a short strip of quality electrical tape. I guess I put too many IDs in this pocket. Wallet wears (not at all) great and my Levis don't wear out in the pockets before they wear out elsewhere. Looks great as well. About $70 at the time if I recall? Out lasted everything else and still looks great but the "outer" side does darken over time.

IIRC mythbusters did a episode on the rayskin wallets demagnetizing credit cards and determined that there was no truth to that.

I had never heard of the rayskin demagnetizing story. I just read that Mythbusters debunked it.

Has anyone ever heard on what the proposed action would have been to cause such a reaction?

Stronger than needed flap magnets were assumed to be the culprit. It seems that the thin eel skin allows a regular magnet used in thicker material to exert more of its force on a wallets contents.

I see, I was really at a loss visualizing how a natural leather would do it...thanks.
