A question on SOG Seal 2000

Since I got my Tsunami I've been thinking how much I like the SOG fixed blades more and more. I checked the photo in the little catalog and like the edge-to-blade ratio of the Seal 2000 better than that of the Seal Pup. It looks like it would be a great "do-everything" fixed blade.

How does this knife ride on the belt in its sheath? That is, does the sheath allow the knife to ride low? My TSunami has a leather sheath, but it rides comfortably because the knife rides low, not poking into my side or lower back.
Jim

Hi James,

Our Kydex sheath ride pretty average for fixed blades worn of the belt...but, they are highly versatile! You can actually drop it down to your thigh or calf and attach it with straps.

Here's a picture of what our Kydex sheaths look like (they all differ slightly):

The SEAL Knife is a great knife. If you pick one up, you won't be disappointed.

BTW, we have a Kydex sheath for your Tsunami.

Ron:
Thanks for the quick reply!:)

I think as soon as I have the extra $$ I will see about getting that kydex sheath for my Tsunami.

Yeah I really like the Seal 2000 design. I originally got the Tsunami, planning it to be a one-time thing (I have rarely bought many fixed blades; my only others being a Benchmade Nimravus, three neck knives...1 Cold Steel, 1 Emerson, 1 CRKT). All of these fixed blades were bought a long time apart. The Tsunami is so awesome that I'm actually a bit hesitant to use it. :D

Lord help me, I'm now also becoming a true fixed blade fan for SOG's designs.

James Y,

Wait 'till you get your hands on a SOG Tigershark! I have a Seal Pup, and a Seal 2000, but my favorite SOG is my Tigershark. That big knife is one BAD-BOY!.:).

Jim,

I've carried a Seal 2000 for over a year. I carry it in a Blackhawk sheath on my SWAT/SERT gear and in the kydex sheath on my diving gear. I've carried it on countless SWAT/SERT ops and diving from the N.C. coast to the Florida Keys in both fresh and saltwater. The knife has proformed better then countless others I have used and seen in use. I liked the knife so much I bought one for my brother, who is in the Army, and my dad who was in the Army. I saw my brother a few weeks ago and he was telling me that everyone in his unit was jealous of the AWSOME fixed blade! He carries it with him everywhere! As for your sheath question, I wear the kydex on my leg when diving but before I bought the Blackhawk sheath I carried the kydex on my duty gear. I dont remember any problems with it at all. I've put my SEAL 2000 thru alot and it has took it all and kept on giving great service!

I've bought several other SOG fixed blades, including the SEAL PUP, TIGERSHARK and the new RECONDO TiNi. They are all geat blade designs as, I have found, are all the SOG products. On another note, I just completed my collection of the SOG Vietnam Series knives. I had origanally only wanted the SOG Bowie, but once I had it there was no stopping! They are all very awsome blades!

Dann and Danny:
Thanks a lot for the replies and comments, guys!
Dann:
I have not had the chance to handle a Tigershark, but it sure seems like it's one big knife.
I'll have to see if I can see one at the next gun show.

Danny:
I'm happy to hear your Seal 2000 has given you such awesome service! I am now very eager to pick one up for myself...oh, the wait will be hard but will make it worth it! :)

Jim

I gave my SEAL knife to a near relative Special Forces Captain who now has it in Afganistan!

I just bought a Tsunami. It has a kydex sheath. Nice knife, if I could buy 2 of them without serrations, I would already have them. The kydex sheath sucks BTW. you need both hands to get the knife out of the sheath because when they did the moulding, they did not leave clearance for the guard. The kydex forms so tightly around the guard, it can't flex sufficiently to let the knife go.
I had the same problem with the sheath on a Government Agent, which is also a very nice knife. I really love the coating on these blades.Maybe Ron can tell us what it is.

Hi Fudo,

The Kydex sheaths actually don't "suck" (don't worry, I didn't take it personally). Rather, they are highly versatile, adjustable and easy with which to work. The tension of the crossguard "lip" can be loosened or tightened to users' preferences. Here is adjusting instructions for SOG's Kydex sheaths for those who would like to make adjustments to theirs.

Every user wants the drag from their knife during the draw from the sheath to be a bit different, so we can preset it for everyone. Some users, like paratroopers, don't want any chance whatsoever that their knife could dislodge when taking a hard landing, so they want theirs rock solid and very secure. Other less active people might want theirs to be so loose that they can draw the knife very simply with very little effort using one hand, almost being able to drop it from the sheath if inverted.

So, we leave it up each customer to adjust there sheath exactly where they like it for their purpose.

The coating on the Tsunami, Government Agent, and SEAL Knife 2000 (among others) is a proprietary, highly durable, powder coating (somewhere I heard that similar coatings are based on Teflon technology). As I see it, there are three general purposes for a coating like this:
  • Corrosion Resistance: The coating greatly assists keeping the blade as free of rust as possible.
  • Low Reflectivity: With its dull dark gray coloring, it is very unlikely that a light source (the moon, a flashlight, etc.) will illuminate the blade. In other words, it's great for covert (or otherwise know as "dark") activities.
  • Aesthetics: There are so many knives on the market that do not have blade coatings, rather utilizing more standard blade finishes (such as satin, polished, or beadblasted finishes). Gun bluing has been used for decades. Recently, other coatings from Black Oxide to Titanium Nitride to Boron Carbide have gained much interest. Though these coating do have some practical benefits, mostly, they are added for aesthetic purposes.
TiNi coatings come in nearly limitless colors. Here's a picture of SOG's X-42 Recondo with a "rainbow" TiNi coating:

Hopefully I've answered your questions. If not, either email me or post a question here.

I fondled...errr....handled one today, and liked it. Comfortable grip, love the large (for me) handle. The sheath,IMHO is alright. I did turn it upside down and shook it to see if the knife would fall out. It took some work, but it did fall out eventually. Im seriously looking at this one to go along with my Gov't which i will be getting soon...toss up between this and the Boker (can I say that in here? ;) ) Fairbane/Sykes (sp) dagger.

LOL.
I will probably end up with both of them.

Yup,its an addiction,folks.

Don't forget the Sogtech, the father of the Seal 2000. And, it comes in big ( I have one) and medium.

Hey Guys,

The Tech is a great knife, but the 7" Tech II was discontinued last year. Only the 5" Tech (formerly called the Tech I) remained.

I'm trying to remember if the 5" Tech has been canceled for this year...I'll have to check my list when I get back into the office Monday.

And Dann, where would you like your commission check mailed? ;)

Ron,

Forget the check, but you CAN send either a Night Vision or a Trident, in lieu of a commission check, to me at:

Dann Fassnacht

:D

...And yes folks, that IS my true address, so if any of YOU want to send me a free SOG knife, please feel-free to do so.:D.;).

Too bad about Sogtech II. She sure was pretty, with her shinny brass guard and those sweet contours on her handle. At least there's the Seal family to carry on the line.

Hi Danny,

If I remember tomorrow (or Tuesday), I'll start a new thread on "Discontinued Knives." The reason for discontinuing them is simply low sales.

If I forget, please remind me. :)

Good to hear the Tech II is so well liked as it is the one I couldn't live without once I first saw it.... ~10 years ago... Was the Tech II made with the same steel as the Tech is/was? (The Tech is still to be found on the SOG website)

Now I am looking for a Recondo. Is it very new? I can't find it at any of my local shops (one says it is not in their current catalog, so they have to wait for their new catalog). I haven't tried a dealer refered from the SOG website yet, they are all a bit far away. Are any of the different colored coated blades available?

Thanks,
John
