A quick and useful mod for AK Bowie sheaths...

Howdy Yall. Just did a neat and quick fix to my Ak Bowie sheath.

The problem: Most AK Bowie sheaths include a strap to go round the handle to hold the knife in place for carry. Problem is, the sheath for mine had the strap at the middle of the handle, where it is widest. This is evident in this pic (which is another AK bowie entriely):

Thr problem is that the method of retention is not effectively placed on the sheath. The knife can ride up outta the sheath about 3-4 inches, exposing a portion of the blade (and thus the wearer to cut hazards).

FIX-- Due to the design of the AK Bowie, the part that protects the hand from sliding onto the blade is a big chunky angled section between the cho and handle. It would also seem that this is the area that cannot come through the retention strap on the sheath while it is closed. So, you just cut the thread that holds the retention strap, then make a slit in the belt loop part of the frog (just on the inside loop, the one that rests against the knife)that is wide enough to accept the strap. Make sure the slit in the frog is as close to the throat of the scabbard as possible. The slit should be made nearest to the bottom of the handle (ie, the handle side that is the blade side). Then, take the loose strap, slide one end thru the slit, and the other around and between the belt loop part of the frog, and thats it. If you have a short strap, just make two parallel slits in the loop of the frog, and run the strap thru both.

Result - The strap is now much closer to the throat of the scabbard, and the knife is held securely and has a limited range of motion while in the sheath. The mod had made a reliable sheath that is a wonderful companion to such a reliable knife.

I'll try to dig up some illustrations or a digi pic of the modification, as the simple mods are the hardest to explain.
Oh! Here we go:

Note that the brown sheath has the retention strap waay up on the belt loop (an integral part of the frog on the HI Bowie sheath), riveted in place. Then note that the Black sheath on the right has the strap further down, held in place by two small slits in the belt loop. well, the Brown sheath is the "Before" pic, and the black sheath the "after" pic of my mod. Except that I took the retaining strap all the way down to the scabbard throat, for minimal blade motion while in the sheath.

P.S. I've really fallen in love with this AK bowie. I appreciate is relative compactness when viewed side-by-side with my YCS and 18 AK. I did an etch to it as well,...anybody feel like posting some pix of it fer me?

Good idea Keith. Easy fix to a potentially dangerous problem.
This bowie would be a great candidate for a retention strap like on a KaBar type knife. The type of strap that fits over the guard or in this case the end of the blade from the back to the front. Wonder if the village sarki could do something like that or if TSarki could.
Anyway your idea is the best fix. Good idea. I have an AK Bowie and will try this soon.

Another one I saw on and old Puma knife was a leather loop that fit thru a hole in the handle and over the buttcap. Loop would be attached to the top of the belt loop. might be able to do this method with the hole in the butt of the bowie.

Keith, I can remember the same problem with Kabar sheaths, and the same solution, thirty years ago. Worked fine then, should work just as well now.

Don't know if it really matters but you might want to watch the general position of the handle to the frog. It doesn't exactly fall in the center like a KaBar(or most other bowies)would. Might help in positioning the slits in the frog for better securing the AK Bowie.

Instead of making two slits, I did one and makde it off-center to compensat for the way the handle rides off center. Easiest to draw a line under the handle on the leather then cut accordingly.

by accident. dropped the sheath w/ knif inside, and the chape popped off. Looks good now, more subdued look while in the sheath, and no thigh jabbing.

I shipped 8 Seaxs today. Great knives but lousy scabbards. The village sarki is a hell of a scabbard maker but a very poor scabbard designer. You may have your work cut out for you.

Excellent, Bill! I'll keep an eye on the post fer them. 8 fills the orders for the "Takers+runes" list.

Scabbards--I'm onay with that. It'll give TSisco some work, or a buncha forumite are gonna have fun designing their own...

All: When I receive them, I'll get my bro's digi cam out so I can sed some "bare blade pix" ahead of shipping them. I know we're all dying ot see howe they turned out...

Keith,

That would be great! We're all dying to see some pics.

Uncle - Thanks for wrapping this up before you go.

that I made, plus pix of the etch to the AK Bowie. Anybody post them ehere for me? I'll email them...

Keith

These are pix of a Sanu HI Bowie I obtained from a forumite a while back. I wanted to add an etch that didn't totally cover or obscure the wonderful lines of this knife, yet looked big and bold. this feather pattern was the trick.

I call the piece Silverwing now. Interesting for the runesters out there to note that the feathers are done to look like the U (Uruz) rune, a rune of natural power and strength, often associated with the ancient European buffalo called an Aurochs. Looked like a giant OX or bull, tall as a Moose, meaner tho.

Pic #2 shows the sheath strap modification I mentioned above, and you can still see the strap's old attachment point about halfway up the belt loop.
