I decided to play with some bamboo when I got in from work this afternoon.

I thought I'd make a quick bamboo container.

You can see how the full flat grind makes for a lot less resistance during sawing because the sides of the knife blade don't rub in the process. The saw is very aggressive and self cleaning. It cut through this bamboo reeeeeaaalllly quick.

The tip did fine opening up the end.

I was cutting the cap here. If you look at my hand you can see why I always look forward to Autumn and then Winter.

The cap.

A bamboo Container with cap roughly two inches by about ten inches.

With a little cordage for a shoulder strap and and one to hold the cap you can have a quick improvised canteen or canister for gathering that only took about twenty minutes to make. This one will likely become my wife's new incense canister.....at least I'll get my cordage back.

Wonderful! Are there any drawbacks to the sawback?

And yeah, can't wait for the insects to die.

And yet another cool one, Mist. Good pics, and I'm starting to like that knife more, the more I see of it.

I saw someone on youtube make something similar, it may have even been a Ray Mears video. Can't quite remember. Very cool.

Thanks Bob. Yeah, the more I use it the more I like it. It's a handy little tool.

Thanks T.G., I used to have access to some bigger stuff down in Florida. I used to have a collection of canisters, bowls, and cups I'd made from bamboo and from coconuts. I was 10 (a long time ago) and I think I more than likely got my inspirations from Gilligan's Island :o

neat! gonan have to find some bamboo here thats thicker...most i've found has been 1" stuff

I am still looking for some bigger stuff. I found some down on the river a while back but unfortunately it is "ornamental" ....and um, I know how I'd react to somebody hacking on my yard....so I left it alone.

with a polycarbonate tube insert, that one you made would make a nice flask....... ;)

Hmmmm, well...I am sort of studying home brewing a bit :)

Good work man! Bamboo is neat stuff. Wish we had a bit around here.

Thanks S.P., I have been asking a lot of questions lately I am wanting to grow a few different kinds, I have found there are a few that will grow here. Some is even easy to contain...but all the ones i want are pretty expensive to start with. I'm still looking into it.

Don't forget about cooking with bamboo containers, a truly joyous experience!! Various pacific island tribes have been using these versatile boilers for thousands of years over coals. Besides the obvious fact that it can hold everything from blowgun darts to water, these multi use super plants can provide a whole lot more! Mother nature provides so many different uses in Bamboo, with it’s tough segmented structure, invasive behavior, and luscious edible roots, it is undoubtedly a piece of cane that human can exploit to no ends. I can’t wait to try a bamboo shirt I have on order from a company. I don’t have any pictures handy, so here is a copy of some brief notes on bamboo cookery. Please forgive the cruddy drawings.

Very cool Mistwalker. Never really had any opportunities to play with bamboo being from Canada. That container is very nifty!

Yeah, I'm planning on making some cooking and eating utensils. I am trying to pick and choose because I only have a little of this bamboo left and then I'll have to try to find some more. I'd like to find some like the larger stuff I had access to in Florida.

Thanks Ken. A lot of people see it as an invasive weed...while it is for the most part aggressively invasive, I see bamboo is an awesome resource and now thanks to climatological changes...some say global warming, some say emergence from a mini ice age and that it runs in cycles....for whatever reason I don't have to go too far south to find it now.

Super cool stuff! Kind of wish we had bamboo around up here...it's so versatile! I suppose all the pine trees we have make up for it though. The things you can do with pitch are ridiculous. :)

Thanks FTB, bamboo is something you can get really creative with.

Seems lots of areas have at least one special plant to offer, and some places more than one, that makes life in that area easier when you learn it. Some places have pines, some places have the birches, other places have coconuts, some places have bamboo, Aloe, prickly pear, and barrel cactus in the desert, the water vines in the rain forest......

Cool thread - there is a house near me that has a patch of VERY tall bamboo and it's probably 100' long by 40' wide of a patch. I'm going to stop by and see if I can take some.

I saw cool plans somewhere for making a fountain out of the stuff. Split it down the middle, remove the ribs and you've got something for water to run through and travel a decent distance.
