A Quick Bamboo Container

I have yet to see a thread posted by you showing someone else using skills. Meaning... it isn't one of those, "just saw a new way of doing this"... then cut to some other dude performing the task. You have always been the kind of guy that has to prove it to himself before showing others and I admire that. You fully document all your experiments and show all the processes from start to finish. None of that "Looky what I made!" or regurgitated info from another source. It's as if we are right there with you, bro.... I appreciate it and hope you continue to share your experiences with us here in BFW&SS.

Cool thread - there is a house near me that has a patch of VERY tall bamboo and it's probably 100' long by 40' wide of a patch. I'm going to stop by and see if I can take some.

I saw cool plans somewhere for making a fountain out of the stuff. Split it down the middle, remove the ribs and you've got something for water to run through and travel a decent distance.

Thanks man, glad you liked the thread. Bamboo is an amazing resource. That's why I am looking into strains I can grow and harvest here in my area. I just need to know I can contain it and there are types that are easier to contain.

Wow, thanks for the compliments bro, Yeah, I do very much like to teach and share experiences, but I do have to know that I can do it myself before I'll share it or pass it along in anything other than question form. When I do pass it on I try to make it as clear and easy to understand as I can. I am a very visual person so I like pictures.

I wish I had noticed that there was a W&SS section here two years ago when you first told me about this site. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I like knives as much as the next guy but at first I thought this site was just about knife makers and collecting knives. I don't "collect" them in the same way most do. It took me nearly a year to realize there was a section here that I really liked and though I did put some serious thought into it a short while back I don't plan on going away as long as others here enjoy my posts.

mistwalker - putting that saw back to good use huh? Looks like your new knife is working out perfet for you. Bamboo is amazing stuff, but you are right about trying to find varieties that are easier to contain, it can take over yards in just a few years if not careful.

Yep, I'm having fun with it that's for sure.

Yes, I know all about bamboo's tendency to spread. I get all the green bamboo I want from a friend out the road a ways as it has taken over his land and spread beyond. At one point I thought of planting it all along a neighbors creek about 150 meters back from the property line...but then I cooled off.

What a great container! Good work there. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks man, glad you liked that.

That was really a neat mistwalker.
Great job.

Thanks Bryan, I'm glad you enjoyed the post!

If I go home the right way I see some wild patches that I think are bamboo growing by the roadside. The reason I say "think" is that I was talking to a guy at a nursery who told me there is something that looks like bamboo but is not as useful- he seemed to really hate the stuff, but couldn't tell me how to tell them apart! Have you come across anything like this?

Also, could you say how you dry it? Is it better to harvest it green or brown?

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!

He is probably referring to green bamboo. It isn't as durable and the beige stuff. It will mold quickly when exposed to the elements. I have been told to dip what I make out of the green stuff in borax or spray it with it if I want to preserve it.

I harvest most of what I get from my neighbor while it is green to get it out of his way, but I have cut some that has turned a tan color and I think it may be better to wait till it changes color.

From what I have done...drying it has been hit and miss. Some split, some didn't not sure yet what I'm doing wrong, I'm still studying it.

awesome container bro! I am going to have to try that

Thanks man, glad you liked that. If I ever get the right kind to grow I'm going to make containers, blinds, wind chimes, and all sorts of stuff out of it...maybe even a fence.
