Just a heads up for my fellow Canadians...I have just purchased a knife from www.onestopknifeshop.com and thought I was getting quite a bargain.
My bargain soon became a lot less of a bargain when the ups man told me I had a $40 import fee to pay before he could hand me the package.
I would have been a lot better off buying from my usual dealer www.newgraham.com ,they have never landed me with this, and that is where I will continue to go in future !!!!

Just an FYI pitdog, that is a UPS thing and not a knivesshipfree.com thing.

My SOP is to ask if they can ship by USPS and go with the ones that will. I refuse to purchase anything that ships by UPS for just this reason. I was also burnt badly like this.

Cheers for clarifying that bro, I will make sure I don't get stung again !!!

No worries. Just wanted to make sure the anger is directly correctly so that UPS loses business over their crazy brokerage fees and no the knife store which is great for being willing to ship to us up here! :D

I've been burned a lot by UPS' 'brokerage' fee. I've been charged for brokerage from other international shippers, but usually for around $25, not UPS' $50!:jerkit:

Recently, I ordered a RC-3 from Cumberland Knives and paid no such fees. My buddy ordered us some Linder machetes from Jax knives, and again, no such fees. I'm glad for the heads up about UPS. Thanks, Pitdog.

That's odd. I've ordered at least half a dozen knives from Derrick at knivesshipfree.com and he always ships through the post office. Did you request UPS? And it is UPS that raped you with their "brokerage fee" not KSF...

Derrick is runs a top notch business and I don't hesitate to recommend KSF to anyone. Now UPS on the other hand are complete and total rapists...

I would tell UPS to go F themselves, and demand your money back, there is not such cost in the line and they know it, they do not charge that to ship for the customers only the little guys, while your at it, call the local TV station and ask them if they want a nice story to pimp on the evening news.

I find all of this rather crazy and a little strange! Didn't the U.S., Canada and Mexico sign the NAFTA agreement a number of years ago? Wasn't this supposed to be for "free trade" among the North American countries? Man, this is nuts! UPS should really be taken to task over this one! Talk about being penalized for buying! Wow! I think I'll boycott UPS down here in the States as well, just because of their "thievery" practices!

Canada Post and USPS have an arrangement to handle each others mail so they either charge a small fee or none at all (can't remeber, if there was one, next to the tax on a couple of Busses it was nothing). UPS is a totally different story. I gather UPS has to pay the tax/duty when it clears customs so the $40 is supposed to compensate them for the onerous task of paying the customs people up front. They claim it is the seller's responsibility to notify the buyer about the charge, but I don't see much about it on their website and I doubt most American retailers know how much it is. Last year a Vancouver law firm initiated a class action lawsuit against UPS (http://www.poynerbaxter.com/UPS.htm). I don't know what their chances of success are, but since you're in BC you can add your name to the list of British Columbians that have been shafted by UPS if you are so inclined.

So what did you get? Or do we have to wait for photos from your next hike.

Pitdog--Your package going UPS was a mistake. We had decided a long time ago that all the knife shipments to Canada would go USPS. Can you shoot me an email (sales@knivesshipfree.com) so I can check my records to figure out what went wrong and why it went UPS.

I'll make it right with you.

That's good business! Bravo, Okbohn.

I'm just starting a small leather and steel company and got stung a few times by UPS..... it is totally ridiculous!!! I recieved a call from UPS to see if I wanted to open a brokerage account.... I was speechless at first.... I told her I thought she was calling to make good on the idiotic importing fees I was charged.... she hung up.

I was charged $32.62 to have (20) firesteels that cost $28.96 shipped to me.

The next batch was shipped USPS and had a charge of only $8.61.... Same package from the same supplier. My supplier was unaware of the UPS charges. They, however, did NOT offer to make it right.

Hey I have to eat massive humble pie here and apologise to yourself !!!!:o

I have just been informed by my wife that we actually ordered from..www.onestopknifeshop.com and not www.knivesshipfree.com as I had origionally planned to !!!

Thank you so much for your quick response in trying to rectify the shipping had I gone through your company ( which I should have done !!!).

Once again I'm sorry for any confusion and would not hesitate to recommend knivesshipfree from now on !!!!!

I have just checked on the www.onestopknifeshop.com site and on there it does say they use ups but for Canada it quotes this...

UPS Canada (ground shipping to Canada Only) $20

NOT the $40 which I have been charged !!!!!

Whew...glad to know that. We were combing over our shipping to see when it went out. I'll let Wendy out of her office now. ;)

Yeah I'm really sorry Derrick, I wish you could see how red I went !!!!

What they quoted you is the shipping price, the $40 is most likely brokerage fee UPS charges for take a piece of paper to the customs.

Have you accepted the package yet? If you did then it's too late and just remember to never UPS. If not, you can do the brokerage yourself and not pay the $40 to UPS.
