The older knives used to have an earlier lock up - 50% and in many cases less. It's obvious that CRK would want to move to a later lock up for liability/safety issues. It's much less likely to fail in an extreme use situation with a late lock up. I prefer an early lock up. With time and use it becomes later and you want room to move.
That checkering or knurling on that lock bar might be their current technique; I'd ask them. However, the ding would turn me off.
