A rainy sunday, some local history and some traditional blade

Hi guys!

It´s a rainy november day and I wanted to go for a short hike today. So I decided to go to the river Inn, where we have swamps and some nice lakes to walk at. A historic river, indeed.

In the Alps there are salt veins in some of the mountains, and even in the roman era people dig mines into the mountains to get the salt out of there. The roman soldiers were payed, at least partially, with salt.
In the medieval times salt was valuable as silver, propably. Not as gold ;) So the people dig deeper into the mountains and rafters took the salt on the river Inn downside to the bigger cities like Innsbruck, Salzburg, Braunau am Inn, Schärding, Passau and upriver to Regensburg, which is on the Danube etc etc. A short link here about the river http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inn_river
The river Inn is the border to Austria from my area and many others. The neighboor town in Austria to my hometown in Bavaria is Braunau am Inn, the place where one of the world´s greatest criminals Adolf Hitler was born in 20th April 1889.
This was the history part... ;)

So I wanted to go to one the smaller lakes that were near the river and mostly inside the swamps there. People use to swim in the lakes in summer and enjoy nature there. Grilling, party, fishing and biking are very common in summer times. In late autumn rarely people go there - not very attractive they think. But to me, it´s really nice to go there. I like the silence, helps to get down a little from stress at work

the blades I carried ;)

This knife I can hardly get out of my hands...

One of the water power plants that are built on the river for making electricity...

Back home I oiled the blades and had a hot cup of coffee... :)

I know the landscape pics are not really great, but I had a nice day out there and I just wanted to share this to the community. It´s a cold and rainy day so light is pretty bad... but I hope you enjoy them as well. The history of the places here around are pretty interessting.

Feel free to comment :)

Thanks for the post. Fall is my favorite time of year. And I like seeing pics of Europe.

Are the pics of the Bavarian side or the Austrian side?

Interesting read, and the place looks great to me. Glad you got out and thanks for sharing. And nice choices on the blades you took along...

Thank you for sharing :-) My favorite season is Fall... but living in Syracuse NY, our Fall is now only ongoing on the calender. Looking at this morning's snow & temperatures, I'd say we are most definitely in Winter mode, lol! ;) Have you ever paid a visit to the Otter Messer factory on one of your day trips? Not sure if they allow factory tours, but sure would be neat. If you have not, and ever do..... please share your pics! :-)

Thanks for the kind replies, fellas - much appreciated! :)

It´s the bavarian side.

Jimmy: Well, I´ve never been to Solingen. That´s about a seven hours plus drive from my door. Never found time to do that - but when I go there, I definitelly would like to do an Otter Messer factory tour. I´m sure, they´ll give you an insight of their production. They even made a video on youtube about making the anchor knife and another one about making the Mercator knife... Each in german language as far as I remember... but worth looking :)

Glad you enjoyed your walk Andi, and thanks for the interesting post

The Inn is certainly a mighty river. Here it is in Austria, at the height of summer.

Great post, Andi!

Sometimes the gray rainy days are the best to be out in the woods. A whole different atmosphere. Somehow I always felt it was more intimate and quiet with a soft drizzle falling. Certainly have less people about.

That is a very pretty puuko. I don't think I would be able to keep it out of my hands, either.

Carl.

And it also brings out the great smells of the forest :)

Great to go for a virtual stroll with you Andi, thank you for taking us along....and for not leaving that knife on the fire ;)

I too love the smell that autumn awakes in the woods.

Great pictures, Andi! Looks like you had a great time. I sure do love your beautiful puukko and its no wonder you can't put it down:thumbup:

Thanks for sharing your walk Andi :) I like to go to places in the "off times" myself...looks like you had a nice day of solitude my friend. Nice to see that beautiful Puukko too.

Thanks for your kind replies, gentlemen. I really enjoyed it walking. However- my Better Half wasn´t with me, because she can hardly move due her pregnancy. Still two months of wait... ;)

Thom: I would leave this definitelly anywhere - not even borrowing it to any guy (or gal)... it´s just a great outdoors tool :)

It might be grey, but it looked a very head clearing walk! Very good choice of knife companions too.

Here it's fast getting darker every day, we're down to about 6 hours weak daylight and soon it will be about four  I find it hard to put up with.

Regards, Will

Fantastic image! Congratulations on your pregnancy. Rest is Best. Wishing you and your partner a short labor and a lifetime of joy!

Thanks Andi for the walk in the woods with you. I may be odd but I truly enjoy a gray day :o

Great knives for your walk as well and I'll echo what others have said about the Puuko

Weren't you in the mood for a refreshing swim? :D
I only know the Swiss part of the Inn where it's much smaller. I'm thinking about making a bike tour next year along the Inn from Graubünden through Austria into Germany.

It doesn't look like you had any snow yet? We had some last week but it's mostly gone again, instead leaving a wet mess everywhere. So I mostly stayed inside, cooking, listening to music and watching movies :).
Hopefully the temperatures drop below freezing soon, I'm not a big fan of that "not fall anymore but not yet winter" period.

I have to ask: what is that heavenly handle material on the puuko? Very unique.
