Just looking for some input on people who have handled both the model 5-5 and the 15 airmen. It will be my first Randall user knife used for hunting and camping just a all purpose knife, everything from food to firewood. Well light firewood work I don't Batton my knives I use a hatchet for that but I would like to know it could take it if it had to be used for that.
I have had a 14 for a few years now and i am still in love with that knife I have used it a few times but it is not the ideal knife for my needs.
Also will Randall make a model 5 with a 5.5 inch blade ?
I also posted this in the Randall knife collector forum but I wasn't really sure if I would get replies there so I also posted in the general.

Thanks for the suggestions
Matt,

I have a 5-6 (O1) and love it very much. It's light, gets very sharp, and is enough knife to handle tasks hiking or around camp. Since you are not batoning with it, I'd say go for it. I don't have an airman, but I do have a #16 sp1 (stainless); it has the double guard like the airman. As a woods/ camp knife, I prefer the single guard and more traditional handle. The 16 is pretty indestructible, and excellent all-around. But it is more a fighter. My 5-6 is more of a general, do it all type knife. Some pics:

When people ask, the 5-6 is the model I always recommend. Randall, himself, always favored the 3-6.

My Airman has a sharpened false edge. It was purchased as one of my early "survival knives" following a couple of the Rambo movies. I wouldn't choose it for general outdoors applications with the sharpened false edge. I like the border patrol handle the best. My concept at that time was that a survival knife needed to be a tough fighter. This has changed.

I had a few Randalls in a past life and my all time favorite was a Model 15 with the Model 1 guard and Border Patrol handle. I found it used at a gun shop in Tampa in the early 90's.

Matt,

When it comes to commercially produced blades, the only thing better than a Randall is TWO Randall.

Get them BOTH.

Well eventually I will end up with both but I think I am going to go with the model 5 with a leather stacked or maby a wood handle. Now the question remains 5 or 6 inch.
Thanks again for all the replies

IMO, 5 is perfect for your need. 6 is too short for chopping and a little too long for skinning and woodwork.
