A really bothersome injury

Since I'm out of commision for knifemaking over the Easter Holidays I guess I might as well report what happened.

Seems about a week ago I managed to get a small tear between my fingernail and finger. I didn't even take notice of it but some steel grindings or some such got into it and the damn thing got nice and infected. I didn't take too much notice of that either until I realized that something was up that wasn't good. Anyway I ended up at the doctor who asked me if blood poisoning was how I wanted to spend Easter. "No" was how I answered that question.

So my hand got bandaged up with antibiotic cream and they took a blood test which was ok. Long and the short is that it's getting better but I can't use my right hand much and I sure can't do any knifemaking or hand sanding for about 10 days.

So if any of you get something like that starts to look infected: red, swelling, throbing that sorta thing. Ah, get it looked at.

It's really frustrating to go into my workroom and see the knives sitting waiting to be finished and not be able to work on 'em.

Lucky I have beer, roast pork, sauerkraut and cottage fried potatoes to ease the pain. :-)

living here in the subtropics, where its nice and warm and humid...almost any cut can get infected easily....the sure cure =ACETONE- this is no joke....the stuff cleans the wound and cauterizes the open flesh so it heals way faster...learned this in the surfboard industry long ago when i used to get coral cuts on my feet on a daily basis and wore rubber slippers most of the time....count your lucky stars you didnt get the flesh eating streph bacteria....YIKES!!!

Bum deal about the finger, it seems like it's always the stupid little injuries that cause the most problems, meanwhile German beer and roast pork doesn't sound half bad!

Just a question: isn't putting acetone in a cut one of those 'new definition of pain' things? Not really a problem (novacaine? what, do you think I'm some sort of wimp? just start drilling!), but it's good to know what to expect.

Hi Tom,

thanks for the tip! I've used Tea Tree Oil on a lot of cuts with good results, but this thing just came up outta nowhere.

I bet that acetone does wake you up when it hits that cut... :-)

What about irrigating the wound with Hydrogen Peroxide? It usually does the trick for me.

hydrogen peroxide is for girls....acetone is for MEN!!!!! once i was squeezing a catalyst dispenser and squirted a bunch of catalyst (thats resin catalyst...very nasty stuff) RIGHT IN MY EYE, being a saavy surfboard guy, i took off my shirt, ran to the acetone bucket, and swabbed out my eye with acetone, talk about PAIN>>>> yes...it hurt....a lot.

The easiest way I've found for detecting those nasty little steel shavings is to make chilli after working. Chilli juice in those little cuts stings badly enough for me. Not that I do it on purpose, nor when I rub my eye with the stuff on a finger

Acetone in cuts or the eye? Ouch, marginally less painful than a welding rod I suppose!
