A recommendation for a straight knife for little ones.

I am getting my son (5) used to a knife. Fully supervised of course, hand over hand mostly.

The problem I was having is that all of the knives I would give him were either too big (what do you mean this Aurora is too big kid?) or they folded (SAK's) or they locked and he couldn't operate the lock (Sak Trekker) or they were damned expensive for him to practice his sharpening on (BRKT Kephart Companion).

So I ordered a Ka-Bar Little Finn:

BR-KA1226.jpg

It looks huge in the picture but let me give you some specs:

OAL: 7 inches
Usable Handle: 2.926 Inches.
Handle Size: 0.771 (at palm Swell) 0.709 (at front Guard) 0.502 at rear Guard
Blade Length (from Ricosso): 3.333
Blade Height: 0.501
Handle Material: Leather Washer, Brass, Aluminum and plastic liners.
Stick Tang secured with a pin through the rear guard.
Steel: Aus 6 or Din 1.4116 Stainless (depending on the year)
HRC 53-55
Hollow Grind - double bevel.
Made in Taiwan

The sheath is made from leather in Mexico. It is a decent little sheath that is machine sewn and has three rivets to protect the user.

It is darned small in the handle for an adult I think - but when I put it in the hands of my 5 year old (who is big for his size - shocker) it is great. The steel is darned sharp it sharpens easily - you don't care if he nicks it as it was cheap.

I am going to add to this review down the road (I am also making custom sheaths for it for gifts to my step-nephew and others) but for 60 dollars on Amazon - I have three of them. Not bad.

I will do a full review if you are interested - and I will get the little guy in on it too. He needs to practice his trap making anyway. ;)

Until my son stops stabbing at his sister and my daughter doesn't continuously lose her's... I'll stick to making them wooden ones, thanks.

Brian Andrews makes a kids knife that you might check out.

I recently picked up a small mora (red wooden handle) that is really small. I think it would be good for a child... except that it doesn't have a guard maybe.

From the specs that's just a little guy. Looks like it would work well and Aus6 should be an easy steel for him to work with. I wish my dad bought me cool sharp things when I was a kid. :D

I'd suggest a mora511. It has a big front guard on it to help increase safety. It will be much lighter than the kabar.

check out ragweed forge for several moras, made for kids, round point plus a guard and kid sized. A little more money gets him a brusletto balder, cool kid size puukko.

victorinox has a line of "my first swiss army knife" all round pointed and with a choice of blades, classic swiss army knife quality.
Also on Ragnar's site, check out the EKA folder for $12. I have two of them for my 6 boys in care. One handle is black the other blue (kind of fits ;) )

good on ya man!

I also got my son a 511. That is a good knife for that purpose.

Then, I made him his own, made for his hand.

I even scandi ground one for someone else.

Brian that little knife is fantastic!
I sure like the grinds on the two blades I got from you! Very refreshing to get a blade and not have to touch it up or sharpen it before use!! :D
be safe... Ted

Brian,

Are those scales as massive as they look in the pic? Why?

TF

By massive, do you mean thick? I am assuming so. On the second knife (bocote) they are sized really good, IMO. My sons are on the thick side. But that is because it is his knife, and that was the way he wanted it. It fits well, so I didn't argue.

Also, it may just look ill proportioned because the knife is much smaller than what you are used to seeing. Don't know.

That is it! I had to ignore his hands - and pay attention to yours in the pic - once I did that - the handle was perfect for a kid.

Please don't see me as criticizing. I LOVE your stuff - I was just inquiring.

I was thinking of Brian Andrews and him showing me his sons mora511 that I thought of it. You know, it is a bit funny (and I don't know your son T), but a lot of little kids will take to the 'red' plastic knife more so than the leather washer handle. They have a different aesthetic sense than us. Plastic is a familiar material to them as they are exposed to it on most 'kid' designed things.

Red plastic Mora = LEGO KNIFE! Perfect for kids and I like that big finger guard on it.
