I work in a school, and recently a student of mine lost his father in a car accident. The student is an avid hunter. I knew his father was a biker so I spoke with his mother (who also works in the school) and asked if she had any HD chains left from one of his bike projects. She said she did and I told her my idea to make him a knife from motorcycle chain (and another decent steel) in damascus, so that he could remember his father. She liked the idea, and will be trying to get me a chain soon. The problem is that I would need to send the chain to someone who is adept at making damascus. I have only tried it once, and do not want to practice on this piece. I am willing to pay for the work. Please let me know if anyone is interested in this project.

Thanks,

Matt

If no one else closer can help you I can. I'm learning damascus from a master ol timer who works with motorcycle chain, chainsaw chain, etc like your talking about among other things. In fact just recently a father and mother brought a HD chain from the bike their son was killed on. They parted out the rest of the bike. He made it while they watched and took pictures. Pretty awesome stuff.

Thanks LCoop. I may take you up on it. I will try to get the chain in the next couple days.

Thanks again.

That's a real cool and very nice idea. I sure he will love it.:thumbup::thumbup:

try this take the chain roll it up like a old snail tack weld it in a couple places and then weld it together like "normal" damascus . the other way is to put the chain into a can and fill the void's with 1084 powder then weld it closed and pound it out ive done both the can is 90 % sure on a first try .. the link's make a kewl pattern .. ive tried both 1084 powder and aebl but like the pattern in the 1084 better more contrast between the black and white metals than the other ..
