A SAK as an EDC blade? Your thoughts?

Hey guys, I am a BIG SAK fan! I own a good 100 or so SAKs. What do you guys think of SAKs as an EDC blade?

I know having a one hand opening knife is extremely handy, I think having the versatility of a SAK outweighs one hand convenience. I think having screwdrivers, bottle/can openers, different size blades, saws, files, etc are better in an EDC role besides a blade. There's a lot you can do with a blade but besides cutting your SOL! LOL

Some people carry a multi-tool and a knife (like me most times) but if it's between a SAK and an EDC folder which is your choice?

Thanks

Had one in my LF pocket every day since 1980 or so...Tinker or Super Tinker. Probably the best EDC there is. I also carry a Spyderco of some sort these days as well but the Tinker is always there. Got married, twice, with the Tinker right there in my tuxedos.

I carry a SAK Adenturer model every single day. I have used many of them and have settled on this model in the last 4 years or so. Have a spare or two if I loose it. I would not be without it. The one that could replace it is the One Handed Trekker.

I have been carrying a SAK every day since around 1980. Started with the Tinker. I spent an entire day looking for a replacement SAK in Colombia after the one I had with me was borrowed from my motel room. I really hated to feel that dependant on a knife but it was and is so darn useful.

My Black Classic has been on my key ring for over 25 years. Carry
a whole lot of other stuff, though..........

For day to day tasks, I've found that an SAK performs extremely well. The knife blade takes care of 99% of tasks that I would need a blade for on a day-to-day basis (ie: random letter/package opening, etc.), and while I didn't used to think that the rest of the tools in an SAK could be all that handy, I've ended up using every single tool on my Alox pioneer since I got it (although not always for their intended application...).

The large screwdriver/bottle opener makes a great little prying tool, and while I still haven't opened a bottle with it, it's pried open paint cans and random junk like that several times. The can opener I've used when I couldn't find a dedicated can opener, and most recently used the screwdriver on the end to take the grips off of a Browning Hi-Power for cleaning. The reamer/awl makes a great scraping tool, so things that I would normally dull the blade on during scraping can be taken care of with that instead. Also great for prying splinters out.

Finally, they're just about as people-friendly as a knife can get. I ended up buying a farmer, too, to see how I like the wood saw.

If I'm going to be doing a lot of cutting or doing something particularly abusive with my knife, though, I carry something a little more rugged or with a little better steel. So, while they seem to make great EDC knives, I wouldn't really want one as a work knife.

I have a growing collectino of Vic Alox SAKs. They do things that my traditional and Chris Reeve's just can't cover. I just picked up a Farmer that has been great during Christmas for trimming tree branches and also slicing food. Quality is also amazing for the price.

A sak makes a fine edc blade. I carry one very often as my only edc. But then I also carry a traditional slip joint pocket knife often too. I've never been a fan of single blade knives, and I don't really see the need for a lock if one observes careful, sane knife handling.

I got my first pocket knife in the early 1950's, and the pocket knives of the day were two blade jacks with a three blade stockman here and there. A lot of the vets of WW2 were carrying the issue TL-29's that they came home with, and they were just a sturdy two blade jack with the second blade w screwdriver/wire stripper. They were a damm fine knife. Very versitile. My own real first knife was the camillus scout knife my dad gave me on my 12th birthday. I got very used to having a choice of blades and tools. I encountered my first sak while in the army in Germany, and fell in love with the little tool chest for the pocket. Never been far from one since. Most times a sak is my edc. More so as I got older. Too handy to leave home, and I can't begin to count the stuff I've fixed out in the middle of nowhere with a sak. The middle of a very large lake and a faulty trolling motor, a loose battery cable on my Vespa out on a deserted country road, stuff like that.

A sak is not just a knife, it's a bundle of options that come in handy. A sak can do knife stuff that a regular knife can't.

But a sak is no good against zombies or in a quick draw contest. Neither of which I've encountered in 69 years of knocking around this rock.

Carl.

Always carry a SAK in addition to whatever other folder I have. Lately a SAK has been my only EDC while at work due to ridiculous "weapon" prohibitions.

An alox farmer has just replaced my small sebenza for EDC. I love me a good SAK. Might switch over to the huntsman plus soon so I can have tweezers and a pen. If only alox could have the tweezer/pen slot...

I would think that if I'm being realistic, I don't need anything other than SAK for EDC. Sometime I carry traditional slipjoint "only" because it's look pretty with jigged bone, patina on the blade etc. I have a few tacticool knives but never really find the needs to use them, even if I force myself to bring it I still don't feel right about using it.

Heck yeah. My Huntsman is pretty much always on me. No reason you can't carry that *and* a one-hander.

I love carrying a sak for edc. I generally have a climber, huntsman, or a camper on me all the time. I had a soldier, but gifted it to my nephew for Christmas this year. Sak's are very handy knives to have around. It seems I'm constantly using the cap lifter or can opener, especially the flat tips on them. And, the scissor's on them gets used a lot. The blades on them take a great edge and slice real well. Apples and sausages are no match for them.

I don't like them. I think the blades are kind of wimpy. I carry a Pocket Pal for lighter duty tasks, though.

SAK's = Pocket protectors of the knife world. They're functional, well made, and cheap, but they have absolutely zero sex appeal.

(now hiding in my bulletproof bunker :D)

I've edc'd a sak for years.

Recently i've been carry a folding knife and this Camo Huntsman:

One of the first knives I got was a Cadet, and I recently carried it again for a day or two. For the sort of cutting I did it was more than adequate. It doesn't have a lock, and the ergos aren't very good, but it sort of made me realize how superfluous all of our more modern knives are. Then I played with a BM and I forgot about the cadet....

Saks are great. I keep a champion plus in my coat. The steel seems to be a bit soft, but maybe it's just the factory edge. Having one always inspires me to tinker(usually break) with things. They're fun to use for sure.

The only relevant question is whether a SAK works for you as an EDC knife. The knife fashion police aren't going to hunt you down and punish you for carrying one.

I EDC a Cybertool 29, however it's not my primary blade; in fact the blades are probably the least used tools on my SAK apart from the toothpick.
