A SAK question for our moderators

Briefly, my opinion:
Old SAKS-do not lock. Champ-still do not lock, jack of all trades. Rucksack and other new locking models-good contenders but would prefer stronger blade.
I settled with LM Wave, complemented with strong single-blade locking folder or fixed blade.

It's heartening to read so many positive postings on the humble- and often maligned! - SAK. I've carried a Champ for 11 ½ years - know the exact date since it was purchased to celebrate my first cigarett-free month, but that's another story. I made a leather belt sheath for it and carry it just about every day. Only time I had a problem w/security was on jury duty, and aside from the fish scaler, I think I have used every blade, although there may be a few stuck in there that I haven't found yet. As to the original question, about the only thing I would add is a flint. Maybe a removable one, so I could use one of the blades to strike it. Yes I know you can carry one in place of the "eye glass" screw driver, but then, how would I tighten those little screws? And just maybe, if they could work it so the file blade was removable, so that it could be used to sharpen the other blades - in an emergency, anyway, not for routine sharpening - that would cool. My .02, anyway.

Anyplace in the US carry the Outrider?? I can only find it in foreign sites. Any help would be appreciated.

Personally, I like their Aluminum handled models the best, nice and durable. They make one model with a bail on it too.

If I were going to get the perfect Victorinox, it would be the Pioneer, this version....

with a bail and scissors.

To me, the SAK represents the ultimate in low profile survival gear. I have yet to meet someone who was against Adults carrying a SAK. That is worth a lot.

I don't spend much time hundreds of miles away from civilization, so my perspective may be different than some of yours, but I haven't carried a SAK since I got my Leatherman Supertool. In my experience, the blades, saws, screwdrivers, etc., on SAK's have been poor performers, with their only advantage being that they are all attatched. All of the tools on the LM, otoh, are top quality. The blade steel might not be what we expect from our knives, but, carrying knives, the blades on my LM almost never get used. If I were to buy or carry a SAK, I'd get one of those "everything but the kitchen sink" models, and carry that as well when I don't know what I might need. I do carry a tiny SAK on my keychain, w/a blade, flathead/file, scissor, tweezers, & LED (much better than a toothpick IMO). And on that I usually only use the scissors, LED, & tweezers. I see multi-tools as the next step in the development of the SAK, and other than the huge SAK's w/everything in them, multi-tools seem to be much more useful. And with all the talk about wanting locking blades, one-hand openers, & super steel in SAK blades; why would it matter what kind of blade is on the SAK when there are so many good quality folders out there to choose from? It's never a good idea to go out (never mind out in the woods) without a good blade, and I haven't met a SAK or multi-tool with what I'd call a good blade. I'm usually carrying at least 3 good blades on me, would be more out in the bush, and that is in addition to a multi-tool (or SAK). To have a SAK as my only knife would be, to me, unacceptable.

There's my rant, carry on...

Medusaoblongata,
You're not wrong. When I have my work boots on I carry a Leatherman Wave. When in DPM I can carry a 71/2 inch CR Project (plus a SAK and sturdy folder). When I have the Land Rover I can have a chain saw in the back. However, nothing beats a good well sorted tool box. You would struggle to fix/service a car with a Leatherman. All the multitool have a limit to their usefulness.

I'm pleased I had no more than my SAK when I was stripped searched in Zambia. (They even let me keep it.)

Better a medium sized SAK than nothing.

Fellas, For those of you looking for some of the discontinued SAK models... check out the Knife Professional, they list some of the oldies but goodies.

I have a few Victorinox SAKs and and have had them for years. Currently, I have three: an older Climber or Mountaineer (not sure which) that has the kitchen sink in it, and two Rucksacks, One of the Rucks in a few years old, with "pat pending" still on it and the old Swiss Army symbol without the coloring in the middle. I mainly carry one of the Rucks and a Leatherman these days.

The Rucksacks have done many chores, including, with the saw and blade alone, a dome-shaped wigwam from saplings, as well as a sweatlodge. A few licks on a ceramic stone brought the blade right back. I've made many firebow sets with it,too, and a few walking sticks. Many other things as well, but it is one that always gets carried in my front packet or around my neck...

I'll post more later...

I made a sweat lodge with my Swiss Champ once, though I do admit, that the phillips head screwdriver was whistful thinking, by the time I had carved a screw, I may as well have just lashed the thing together, it's really really hard to get the threads right and wooden screws tend to break

I did use the corkscrew once I finished the project...

just a bit o' humor nothing against SAKs I've carried mine since I was in the fourth grade.
