A sharpening Enigma-does this happen to you too??

JohnW,

Man I love it. I never thought about the burr being aligned with the edge, so's not to be detectable by feel or viewing with magnification. I thought about this and went home and played around with the Sharpmaker. I see that I've been having this very problem. I'd sharpen until I thought it was done, and later wreck the edge with even light cutting.

Please help me understand this, though: If the burr is on the right side of the blade (when held in hammer grip), will it shave better when the left side is laid against the arm?

Here's another question: Why is it necessary to use light force when sharpening when the edge will be heavily loaded later? As John mentioned earlier, it is possible to get an edge shaving sharp and then cut rope and wood and still have it shaving sharp.

So much to learn. Thanks to all.
