A sharpening kit ?

Thanks for the update Heirphoto. That sounds encouraging and I know that I have lots to learn but willing to learn. Thanks for the word of caution as I will follow the set up instructions if I get the kit. By the way which other 2 coarse stones did you get?
I am getting closer to decide what I am going to do but the Lansky does seem like a good deal. I would like eventually to learn free hand but I figured this might teach me a bit more and then go to the free hand stones.
Thanks folks for all of your great comments.
Regards
Tar :)

Hi folks. Well I pulled the trigger on the Lansky kit yesterday. I decided to get the kit first and then in another month or so get the diamond rods to fit my SM.
Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions and opinions.

If you considered free hand sharpening (maybe with an angle wedge) then you would only need one stone and I would recommend either a coarse Sigma Power Select II waterstone from Lee Valley or a Norton Crystolon combi oil stone. You can use this to put an edge on your knife slightly lower than the SM, eventually you can use it even to complete the task altogether and use the SM if you have a "bad" day.

As far as sharpening wedge, I would recommend a low angle at about 8 degrees. That will give you an effective angle of 11-15 dps (due to the primary knife grind). Therefore, you can always use the 20dps SM setting for the final apex. For good quality wedges, I suggest to contact Fred Rowe here on BF.

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is this angle wedge you are referencing here?

Hi,
These are from fred.rowes

Those wedges don't look pointy enough , the ends are too thick,
lots of blades would come off the wedge before contacting the stone,
like a mini clothes pin on a swiss army knife blade,
but those things are much thicker than the mini clothes pins I have
Now this is pointy

Maybe fred.rowe has pointier wedges for use with knives directly ...
