I saw this on one of Doc's posts FOREVER ago - and Walt sent me a few horns to use on my leather work.

I had this one left over and it fits my hands PERFECTLY.

1/2 drill bit - going slow - and taking my time. Works GREAT!

TF, it's not a horn, it's antler. In view of 2 of your recent posts, I guess you have to wait a year or two to read my posts  :D

And you don't need to drill it, you can use a knife.

BTW, I remember you recommended a couple of books for beginning leatherworkers. I should have written them down, but I didn't. Help, please!

Horns antlers - aren't these the same? Is one hollow and the other not?

Al Stohlman - Two books 'Making leather cases Vol 1' and 'Art of Handstitching'.

I'm glad I read this. I was about to start a thread asking about a good leatherworking book for noobs. Thanks, TF. Oh, and the antler bowdrill handhold looks really cool.

Very nice TF! Looks primitave, which is always cool.

I bet the antler is really smooth against the spindle in use....

Coolio:thumbup: Glad those are working out for you! One thing I would do-seal the cut end and maybe the even the hole with some thinned epoxy or superglue, using a latex covered finger. Sealing the cut end will help keep moisture out, and sealing the hole will help keep from wearing into the pith, which is much softer. That should keep it working for you for quite a while:thumbup:

Don't know anything about horn (except the one in my van).

Thanks TF, I have the first one but not the Art of Handstitching.

JW, moose antler is my favourite hand hold and yes, it works very well.

Horns are permanent (one set per life: bighorn sheep, rhinos, goats) and antlers are seasonal (deer, elk, moose, etc.) I always find it fascinating that a twelve point buck doesn't have that huge rack because he's been growing it for longer, he has a larger rack because he is a healthier, more mature animal.
