I like Dans work..every since seeing his Yt tree chopping vids..
I'd always thought of the 1111 as the "poor mans battle mistress", I think it was Legaleagle who first told me that. As you can see from the pics, he was pretty spot on.
So after measuring the ASHBM a bit, next to my 1111, I think I understand how a thicker blade can bite much deeper. I'll spare you too many caliper pics,, but here is a crude drawing of my findings.
Like the wise Resinguy has told me before "geometry cuts, geometry cuts, geometry cuts, what I tell you three times is true"
Someday I'll get around to sending the 1111 off for a reprofile,, I think it has A LOT of potential with a little regrind..
Cheers
I just came back from the woods with the two of them, and with the work Ive already done on it, it is honestly a great chopper. I don't necessarily want to spend a lot of money getting it reground at the moment, but eventually it will be FFG. I'll bet it will be phenomenal..Imagine that 1111 with a full flat grind, or even just the original bevel transition knocked down significantly.
You could just use a harbor freight 1x30 and a sharpie bro. That's what I'll end up doing. Lots of cool stuff can be accomplished using one of those
Thanks! That looks great! Did you use your 1x30 for that?
I'll go knock around the woods with it today or tomorrow and post pics,, but I have a feeling its going to be a performer.
Couldn't have done better myself sir. I try to stay away from dykem, that stuff don't come off. Sharpie is where it's at.Thanks!
I have a 4x36, which kind of already has a platen. I marked the blade with blue layout dye, went nice and slow and kept dunking the blade in cold water.
I took off the shoulders and thinned everything out, then finished everything on my worksharp.
All in all it probably took 2 hours.
I'll go knock around the woods with it today or tomorrow and post pics,, but I have a feeling its going to be a performer.
