A slight change in my Scandi - advice sought.

I was thinning the bevel of my scandi just a bit the other day to allow it to be a little better at slicing. Nothing crazy - but widening the bevel from about .285 to .310. I am very happy with the results and the edge seems no weaker for the process.

However, I left the tip portion at .285 to keep a more steep bevel. My thinking here is that it would retain some strength in the tip whilst drilling.

Am I over thinking this? Is this an unecessary or foolish step?

Using a right triangle calculator and assuming a 1/8" stock thickness, increasing the bevel width from 0.285" to 0.310" lowers the angle from 12.67 to 11.63 degrees per side. So you're only changing the included angle 2 degrees. It's probably not going to make your tip significantly weaker, but I'd say leave it thicker until you do more thorough testing with the new geometry.

You are an animal, Tal. Most of my knives have a more meat on the tip than the belly. It is a reasonable assumption that it will make for a stronger tip. I would go more extreme if I were you... see how far you can take the belly bevel down before you start noticing performance loss. It will all be relative to your personal experience/technique. Good experiment.

Yeah, what Rick said.

You could even make a fusion knife - Oslo meets Tokyo
Grind the cutting edge bevels higher ( low angle),say .500", and then shift to the tip to at the higher angle of .285. Let the two meet at a yokote line. It will slice like a fillet knife but still have a strong piercing point.

Tycho,

Wow - your calculations are exactly what I needed to settle my mind. The grind was a little higher than 25 degrees to begin with and I wondered what I ended up with when I was happy with the grind. 23 degrees is something I am very happy with. Not too thick - not too thin. Thank you for the help with the math.

Rick,

Well - at least ugly people think alike huh? I thought that made sense to me - but being such a neophyte - and frankly - a philosopher - I tend to miss the practical and obvious because I overthink (under wisdom) things.

It is great to hear from you bro. I hope you are sucking less at life these days.

Blad,

I had to look up Yokote line. ;) But I get what you are saying. Thanks!!!!

Ahhhhhh.... that's the Talfuchre I've come to know and love... not like that other polite, sally-boy that was using you profile ID to do good.;) You have always been an overthinker. When we are posting in the same thread, I can kinda "dumb-out" a bit to keep the intellectual balance in check... you're welcome.
