A special order (first HI)

Samurai, Congrats on a great choice for what is a very good all around blade as a starting point.

I am also one of those who recently purchased her first Khuk and now has... umm. 11 HI blades currently in my hands and the very awesome micro mini bowie that is making the rounds of checkering and sheath customization by a couple of the extremely talented forumites. Once she arrives home that will make an even dozen HI blades and I see no end in sight of ones I want to own. Welcome to HIKV.

Thanks! Yeah, the big bowies have been calling my name... Good to be here.

You can fire an email to Auntie early next week if you still haven't got anything. Don't worry - HI customer service is amongst the best I've seen.

An update, I got the charge! No email, though; I sent one to Auntie with the details of my purchase included to verify reception of the order. Good stuff. I'm excited.

Samuraiprose. Congrats on your order! Aunti Yangdu is like all the rest of us and usually takes some weekend time off. I wouldnt worry too much and you will likely hear something beginning of next week. I have had excellent service ordering off the website and if the item is in stock a few days and it will be in your hands. Thats about as good as it gets! If you dont hear from her mon or tue i would email her directly and enquire of your order. Id say from my experience all is good!
I envy you both. First blade's the beginning of the path, eh?

A last question. I put in my order yesterday and received no confirmation email despite ticking the box that allows for an email to be sent to confirm the order, and have not yet received a charge in my account. Do the email and charge typically follow a purchase immediately, or only once received and processed?

I did just that. :) It was taken but not processed because the CAK is not in stock at the moment. Nepal (and shop) are going through power shortages, so wait time is extended. No problem in my book. You can't put a clock on this kind of quality and hard work. I am more than willing to wait for it to come in with the next shipment. Thanks. :D

Might just watch DOTD's and snag something to play with while your waiting for the CAK. Word of caution: This puts you at high risk for HIKV:D

I'm afraid I caught a bad case of HIKV. I bought my first HI blade from the 5/5 specials, the Sirupati by Kumar. That blade must have been a carrier of the HIKV, because somehow I've already got 5 more! But I don't think that it's such a bad disease to catch:

I have to say your off to a great start! I dont even think the CDC expected this HIKV to replicate in sets! That was a killer deal on them Bowies right there!

Not a bad virus really but you do seem to have an extremely fast growing and aggressive strain of it. Good for you.

Lies! I have cut down at least 3 trees 6-8 inch in diameter with my 15 "sirupate. I have used it to clear a field of bermuda grass, I split/baton with it. Used it as a pry bar, even demo-ed a gazebo with it! At 3/8 " thick, it is deffinatley not limited to combat.
I haven't used any of the kukris you're interested in, and I don't know a lot about kukris in general. However, I have been reading through this forum for some time. I believe the general consensus is that the Sirupati is NOT suitable for field work, or bushcraft. It's strictly a combat blade that may be suitable for relatively light general chopping.

The Ang Khola, I believe, is somewhat better suited to general chopping than the M43, while the M43 may be (based on something one person said) better suited for chopping wood. You should also consider the difference between the regular Ang Khola and the Chiruwa version - as far as I can tell, the regular Ang Khola is better at chopping because it has a better balance and less vibration, while the Chiruwa is somewhat less likely to break. I don't know if the Chiruwa is tougher because of the larger tang, or because the handle is 2 pieces instead of one, or something else. I also don't know how much difference any of this actually makes.

Anyway, I hope some more knowledgeable people are able to chip in with their two cents.

I stand corrected.

In real life very tough and capable, not limited to combat, but too HI it is not on the warranty list for the above mentioned task.

Will it do it, most likely yes. If you break it will they replace it, most likely yes because they are nice but they clearly don't have to as they specifically exclude that model from the abuse list.

I find that HI blades are probably well enough built that they will do a LOT more than they are warranted for. However given the fact that there are so many different blades available I don't see a need to use a Siru as a pry bar. Will they do it? As Bawanna mentioned quite probably but then you CAN use a screwdriver for a hammer too. Doesn't necessarily mean it is the best hammer you can get.

One of the things that makes HI knives so addicting to me is the fact that they are handmade and as such, vary greatly.

For instance, someone above mentions they have destroyed a lot of wood with a Siruapti that has a 3/8" spine. My first Siru was a 20"er with a big thick spine like that as well and I'll bet it could be used pretty hard as well which is contrary to the reputation for that model.

My favorite Siru is another 20"er that "only" has a 1/4" spine. It has a completely different feel and to me feels like a pure weapon and is so fast in the hands you can swing it fast enough to make that "cutting air" sound.

In short, that is why to me 1 of any kind of HI Khukuris is never enough. Each Kami has their own "flavor" as well, so to speak, which also adds to my need to acquire more.

I will say this though--I tend to like the bigger knives. A 15" BAS or Sirupati seems very small to me (but they make great gifts for a few of my cousins, avid outdoorsmen but very small at 5'3" and 5'4" vs my 6'2") and I think 18" is the sweet spot for an AK or CAK but with their generally thinner blades 20-22" for Sirupatis and Chitlangis.

samuraiprose, what size CAK did you order? Sorry you have to wait but if you're interested I have a few 18" CAK and you can keep one warm for me while you're waiting, no charge.

falar,

I am sorry for the late response as I have been out on business (and pleasure). I believe travel is good for the soul. :D

It seems as though we have the same perspective in terms of needs and wants. Lots of people have taken their Sirupatis to the field and busted up plenty of wood with it with no damage to the blade. Your 1/4" thick Siru sounds like one hell of a blade and ideal for a fighting blade; did you get it from HI?

I cannot order just yet as there are no models in the shop at the moment, so my order was refunded. I had settled on the 16.5" CAK. Your offer is very generous and much appreciated. I have admittedly been curious about the 18" CAK; might I send you an email or two regarding the specs of it? I am at samuraiprose@gmail.com.

(I am also intrigued about the M43, and have debated just getting that instead, since it seems to be the perfect marriage of the qualities I had mentioned wanting earlier on in the thread. That curvature in the handle and that long blade just look sweet as anything, not to mention that graceful belly in the cutting edge...)

My 1/4" thick Sirus did come from HI, they were made by Rajkumar. Currently all 20+ of my Khukuris are HIs. I tried some of the other brands but didn't like them nearly as much and gifted them away.

I can email you some specs when I get home tonight. I have a 16.5" CAK as well and while it is NOT a small knife by any means I really prefer 18"ers for the additional reach and weight. They practically do the work themselves.

I managed to get my hands on an 18" CAK sans karda and chakmak.

This thing is absolutely perfect. Maker's mark is a trident.

I love it! I couldn't be happier! Thank you, Yangdu!

Yessir. I am a beginner, but this thing is godly.

Why do you ask?

EDIT: Oh, gotcha. Made by Min Bahadur Kami. His work is spotless!
