Niece wants a pocketknife. No worry, I'm a knife knut! I totally got this! However, she has some specifics for this one:

1. Folding knife
2. Lives in Spain so needs to be legal there: Locking blade OK, but 11cm limit (4.3")
3. Single blade only
4. Full serrations
5. Wood scales (which I would most likely have to purchase and install separately)

I'm a traditional knife guy, so my 57 year old brain started to seize. Then I thought of Spyderco. Lots of options with blade length, wood scales available, and Spyderedge has a good reputation. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, but I'm not going to scrimp. So if I do go with Spyderco, what would the candidates be? What other brands would fit the bill? I can't think of a traditional that would work, but I'm open there, too.

Have fun!

Spyderco would be a great choice. Also consider some for the Spanish brands, unless she already has those. But the full serrations requirement may limit you to only Spyderco.

Hmmm, that might be a little bit of a tough one with the fully serrated blade. The other options are easy to find. The first thing that came to mind was the Spyderco Chaparral with the Birdseye Maple scales, however looks like they don't make it in a serrated version.

Aren't there guys that can do serrations on any blade? I have this nagging feeling like that at least was, if not still is a thing. Then again blade reprofiling can very quickly double the cost of a knife. I didn't see a budget set in the original post, but if it's truly something he wishes to accomplish I'm in full agreement with you that the serrations part of this could be the straw that broke the camel's back otherwise.

I see a spyderco tenacious 50 bones and PM2 200 bones on bhq, fully serrated. In fact, you can use the search function on bhq or kcenter and just search for full serrated. That's what I did to find them. And I know the tenacious and PM2 have aftermarket wood scale options.

Great lead! Thanks!!

Still looking, too. This is not an urgent buy.

Unless she has a way to sharpen the serrated edge, I might try to talk her out of that feature which will really open up your options.

Endela or endura, the delica can have wood scales but is a little small. The endelas a great size but no idea if you can get wood scales. Might have to check out your scale options first then see what models you can pick from

She's pretty handy. I wouldn't recommend a Cold Steel serrated blade, but the Spyderedge looks like it would take a sharpening rod well.

But I'm still looking.

If the niece says she'll go with half serrations, I will look at a Buck 110. She's not looking to carry it regularly, so weight won't be a big issue. But I'm still looking for options.

Blade length.
Buck 110 with any serrations is rare.......no current production one available that I know of.........

If you find a knife that works for you but doesn't have serrations, you are welcome to send it here first and I will put my serration pattern on it for you for a minimal fee plus shipping. You could grab one at a Canadian retailer to have them ship it to me and I can ship it to Spain after I work on it. It's a quick job so I would sneak it in with the current workload.
