That's a really nice color and pattern, Uncle Bill. What is it? Are the kamis able to find and make more without endangering wildlife? There's still at least one more khukuri on my shopping list.

:
I have noticed something interesting about the Buffalo horn.
The Kamis do a very nice job of polishing it with what they have.
When I put it on my highspeed buffer with a white compound it polises it even smoother.Sometimes it brings out a similar grain that can't be seen without the high polish.
It is like a black on black and it has to be the grain in the horn and cutting across the layers of it when shaping the handle.

Horn is a nice strong material.I do have to say that Ghost is right when he says he has heard the black is stronger. It seems that way to me when I am working it and it seems to take a higher polish without burning quite as quickly as the white does.
I can get it very smooth and shiny, but at its best it isn't as nice as the solid black in my opinion.I will still take any of those pretty white laced ones I can get though.
The handle on my G/S is very pretty!!

Khukuri FAQ

I just dropped a package for you in the mail this afternoon. You should get it tomorrow PM I would hope as it is on the way to Reno right now.

OK, Rusty.

I once got in a khukuri years ago that had a horn handle that was so light it was transparent or perhaps more correctly translucent. If you held it up to the light you could see the outline of the tang inside the handle. I also remember that Dr. Bill Rosenthal got that one for his collection. It was the only one I have ever seen out of maybe 10,000 khukuris.

Yvsa, in my early experimentation with polishing handles I often turned them brown on the buffing wheel. Slowly, brother.

Thanks, Yvsa, for the tip about using the white polishing compound. I'll try it right away!

I want a translucent handled khukuri Uncle Bill!

Thanks.

It just so happens on the Non-specific Manufacturer's Forum, they're discussing plain vs. streaked handles right now, too.

There are possibilities...... especially if you go with a larger formed brass butt, like an the chesapeake bay ones.

Dave, I'd like to have that translucent handle myself. Should have put that one under the bed.

Eric, thanks for tip but I don't have time for any forums except this one.

And, Rusty, you are correct. That's why we make the spotted deer horn handle as we do -- horn is too small usually so we implement with silver or brass buttcap.
