I took the little one for a quick walk around one of my favorite ponds in the woods that will be much harder to get to after next weekend when the side roads at the WMA are cabled off for the winter. I thought would go for a Sunday walk and have a bit of a snack among the cypress trees and ferns. I took the 12 inch machete in the new sheath, and the Kephart. I used the machete a few times removing large brier vines from our path, and man I am really digging the new sheath. Heber did an awesome job with it. It rides great, and blind re-sheathing wasn't a problem for me. I didn't use the Kephart as much as I intended to, she and I mostly spent time talking about life, something I didn't get to do near as much of last year as I would have liked. I did use it to quickly sharpen a stick for her come snack time though. I thought I'd share a few pics from the outing.
It's called Crater Lake. It's not a real crater, it is a lake make from the crater made by the film crew for the crash site of the space ship in the movie Star Man. Afterward they built a dike at the end to make a catchment for the spring that runs through the area.
There are some pretty thick, and mean, briers here in this area. But the machete made quick work of them.
It's been a few years since we hiked here, she was younger and had never really paid attention to the cypress knees.
I really like this area. It's one of my favorite meditation areas in the winter. When the roads are closed off, few ever make the hike in, and I have I to my self. This area doesn't look near as lifeless as some of the others I frequent.
She was my little helper today and carried my little pack for me part of the way, and decided when it would be snack time.
Not much of a snack really, just slim jims and smoked oysters. It's funny how siblings can be such opposites. My oldest daughter could not stand smoked oysters, but with this one, she'd eat them all, I suppose it needs to be two tins of them next time.
Then we ended up doing a little bit of a land nav discussion because she saw my compass in my pack.
A parting shot of the Kephart. Man I love how this handle blends in with my favorite environments
