A Sunday Walk In The Woods

I took the little one for a quick walk around one of my favorite ponds in the woods that will be much harder to get to after next weekend when the side roads at the WMA are cabled off for the winter. I thought would go for a Sunday walk and have a bit of a snack among the cypress trees and ferns. I took the 12 inch machete in the new sheath, and the Kephart. I used the machete a few times removing large brier vines from our path, and man I am really digging the new sheath. Heber did an awesome job with it. It rides great, and blind re-sheathing wasn't a problem for me. I didn't use the Kephart as much as I intended to, she and I mostly spent time talking about life, something I didn't get to do near as much of last year as I would have liked. I did use it to quickly sharpen a stick for her come snack time though. I thought I'd share a few pics from the outing.

It's called Crater Lake. It's not a real crater, it is a lake make from the “crater” made by the film crew for the crash site of the space ship in the movie “Star Man”. Afterward they built a dike at the end to make a catchment for the spring that runs through the area.

There are some pretty thick, and mean, briers here in this area. But the machete made quick work of them.

It's been a few years since we hiked here, she was younger and had never really paid attention to the cypress knees.

I really like this area. It's one of my favorite meditation areas in the winter. When the roads are closed off, few ever make the hike in, and I have I to my self. This area doesn't look near as lifeless as some of the others I frequent.

She was my little helper today and carried my little pack for me part of the way, and decided when it would be snack time. :) Not much of a snack really, just slim jims and smoked oysters. It's funny how siblings can be such opposites. My oldest daughter could not stand smoked oysters, but with this one, she'd eat them all, I suppose it needs to be two tins of them next time.

Then we ended up doing a little bit of a land nav discussion because she saw my compass in my pack.

A parting shot of the Kephart. Man I love how this handle blends in with my favorite environments :)

Those are the days to remember and cherish. Looks like a great time. I have yet to use my machete - mine still needs some pants.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice, very nice Mist. Canned oysters?! Awesome snack man, right up there with kipper snacks.

Looks like a nice day.

Yeah, they are my favorite moments. I didn't take any pics of the sheath today, it was on my belt, but I am really liking this sheath Heber made very much.

Thanks brother. Yeah, smoked oysters and smoked clams are my favorites. I haven't tried little bit on the kippers. She has pretty adventurous tastes in food, next time I'll do some of each I think. The worst that can happen is I get a tin of kippers to myself :)

Star Man was an awesome 80s movie. I still think about it when I pass the Martin Springs exit - where they filmed the deer reanimation scene. It's gone now, but the restaurant was located next to the Chevron.

Yeah, it was a really cool movie. I hadn't even thought about it in years, then an old man pulled up today and walked down to the pond. He asked if it were really a crater. So I explained to him how it got its name. Makes me want to find the movie and watch it with Alayna.

Thanks guys, I always have a great time out roaming the woods with her. I worry much less this time of year with all of her natural curiosity...

All I remember about that movie is yellow light means go very fast. ;) It became my mantra. **Looking over my shoulder for Bud.** :D

Great pics and post, Brian. Only canned seafood I've ever had is tuna. Maybe someday on the others.

Life doesn't get much better than having the chance to share your fascination with nature and the woods with your kids. Fortunately, my kids all have been infected with my wife's and my own love of the outdoors. Thanks for sharing your pics!

What...no bushcraft fork? ;):D

Looks like a great day with a favored companion. No better partner than offspring!

That Kephart is a beast.

Fantastic Photo's. I always enjoy them. They make me wish I were there.
Thanks for sharing

I get to spend a lot of time in the woods, usually...though this remodel is putting a damper on that some, but I remember months of working in the bowels of a nuclear power plant from before sunrise till after sunset. seven days a week for six months once. I would have given anything just to see the woods during the day before the end of that outage. I figure since I do get out so often these days, maybe I can help create some bright spots in days for others who have similar experiences. I am glad you enjoyed the photos Peter!

I barely remember it at all, the 80s were a uhhh very complicated time for me. Hence me wanting to get it and watch it with my daughter. I remember it being filmed out there, I was living in those woods much of the time back then. I did watch it once later to see what it looked like when they were through, but when my daughter started asking me questions I really couldn't answer most of them.

Tuna? Tuna is great, but BORING, you really need to live a little and try other things Kris :)

This post confirms I need to move closer to a nice patch of woods. Great photos of a great day Mist.

It really is good for the spirit. I remember living in Miami back in the late 80s and the drive to the everglades to get away from the urban sprawl.

No it really doesn't. My time getting to do this with my oldest passed too quickly, I'm glad for the chance to do it again. I'd rather see my kids exploring the woods than staring at a plastic box any day. Thank you sir, I am glad you enjoyed them!

Fork?! No way, I tried that once, then she ate them 3 at a time and I got like two :) She is definitely me preferred woods roaming partner, I love to see the fascinated looks when she discovers something new.

Yeah, but I am totally digging the tapered 3/16 :)

Awesome post Mist -- great post; thanks for sharing!

Thanks Will, I'm very glad you enjoyed it!

Brian my same thoughts have already been posted here throughout this thread. I will re-emphasize the pure joy a dad feels from spending a day outdoors with his daughter or children. I am biased to daughters though having two adult daughters myself. :D

I will simply say Thank You for the wonderful thread. Again ....

It won't be long before you're taking grandkids to the woods like me. In November I got to take my 4 year old grandson hiking. It wasn't much of a hike, but he was really into looking at bugs and deer and birds. He spent 15 minutes digging into a rotten log with a sharp stick. Last weekend, he and his dad went out to shoot some skeet. He got to throw targets from a nice electric thrower, and he had a blast doing it.

You have a great legacy to pass down to your kids and grandkids and hopefully, many of their friends. I am glad that you take it so seriously!

Sounds like you guys had a blast! That time is coming for me fast indeed. My oldest had my first grandson back in July. He's only five months old now, but it won't be long till I have him out in the woods :)
