A Tale of 2 Karambits.

Damn, the Emerson bashing is getting rough.I only have one but it is perfect. Why slam a company over one problem?

Well, to be fair, the plain edged CQC-12 I had was perfect other than the back-spacer.
My Super Karambit was perfect other than a bend in the liner near the retention ring; it was a tiny bend, so I felt it didn't matter.
If the other Emersons I had had been shoddy, I wouldn't be compaining now, as I either wouldn't have bought any more of them, or I would have expected problems.

I really understand being frustrated by having to pay $14 dollars for warranty work on a brand new knife. Why can't you just send or take it back to where you bought it?They will probably send you a new one.The reason I brought up the bashing is because of your comparison to a less expensive Taiwan knife and the subsequent piling on of EKI by others.I really would contact the place you bought it from first.

Well, in this case the Taiwan knife IS better construction. Kinda surprised at that myself.
The place I bought it from is on the other side of Canada, and they suggested I go through Emerson for warranty work.
I probably could have exchanged it if I hadn't fixed the rounded point, but that's water under many bridges now.
I'll try them again though, as I've spent a bunch of money there. Maybe they'll be able to cut me some slack, who knows.

The guys at 5.11 said that they searched for a very high quality factory in Taiwan to produce their series of folders (including the two karambit models). Everything I have seen from 5.11 (except for one slightly strange lock on a Journeyman karambit) has been excellent. I have carried a Journeyman karambit almost every day for a year or so with no issues.
As I mentioned earlier in this thread the only other issue I have seen is that some of the Master's model karambit with S30V blades don't seem to be as sharp in some of the batches. The 154cm found on the Journeyman model arrives sharper than the S30V in most cases.

Sorry your Emerson karambit has caused you trouble. I actually have purchased 5 of the stonewashed combat karambits and 2 of the stonewashed super karambits and there are no issues with any of them. I guess a few get past QC every once in a while and it sucks when you end up with one.

How do you get around the legality issues of karambits in Canada?

They're just legal here.:)
Might be harder to explain as a tool unless it's well worn, but nothing unlawful about possessing one.
I think it has to have more than one finger hole to qualify as a "knuckle knife."

Update: I'm shipping the knife to Emerson today using Purolator as the shipping service(screw UPS Canada!:thumbdn:).
Emerson says they'll cover return shipping as well, so I'm feeling much better about the situation.
So, in 2-3 weeks everything should be cool.:)
