A tale of two mountain men - Queen Mountain Men, that is

Interesting. But WHY is one thicker?? Is the LB a more recent run and they've started using thicker stock?

Got a BEM Teardrop linerlock, the wood is not really my cup of tea, much prefer the WCSB/ACSB, or the new intro Zebrawood(it's really something) BEM is durable mind and feels sleek in hand.

Beats me as to why. I believe the two knifes to be from the same time frame.

Queen is no longer using the BEM. The BEM handles date from about 2006. (I find fewer issues with 2006 Queens than with those from 2010-2012. Fit and finish is a bit better and it comes with a better edge.)

I like the heavily stabilized BEM because, as you say, it is "Durable", with a capital D. Goes well with the D2. D2 isn't fancy, but it cuts like a banshee.

Frank, DURABLE it most certainly is! It shows no problems with damp use and, as I live in a very dry environ in wintertime, it has shown no shrink or movement whatsoever. Maple is tough gear. Impressive ,as a lot of other materials and woods do shrink or 'move'. I just don't much fancy the colour.

As for D2, I've lately joined that sect! At first I was disappointed with my pathetic efforts to sharpen it, then I put diamonds to work and they are not only a girl's best friend but D2's too! I'm very enthusiastic now, it doesn't seem to impart flavour to food and it certainly cuts from here to eternity:thumbup:

Knarfeng, would you mind doing a comparison shot with a Country Cousin?
And I think I am going to get the zebra wood slip joint version of this knife eventually.

Are the shields pinned on your knives Frank?
Haven't the foggiest, Ed.

Size does matter...
(With apologies to the ads for the last Godzilla movie.)

Well dang it Frank, when the fog lifts in San Diego,:) could you take a look at the inside of the liners and let me know.:D

For what am I looking?
Looks like a featureless piece of metal to me.
So do the liners on my GEC knives, and they are supposed to have pinned shields.

If you have good light, you should be able to see little pin hole, filled with the pin, inside the frame/scales under the shield, if it is pinned.

I can see them in my GEC with shiels

That's probably a nocando. I used a flashlight and didn't see any such feature, even on the GECs. I don't see small features well these days, even with glasses. Someone else who has a Queen knife will have to answer the question. Although I don't think Queen pins their shields.

I have the birds eye maple lockback version (3L BEM) purchased a couple of years ago. I don't see any indication of a pin behind the shield. It was even sharp from the factory. Interesting post Frank. Never would have believed the different thicknesses. My lockback pretty much matches yours.

OK according o my experience, the BEM & Bone Stag models have glued shields. How do I know? Well, the shield on my BEM Teardrop was raised&messy had glue marks around it...then fell out! Found it and glued it back. The other day, a Queen Utility (Slimline Trapper) in WCSB lost its shield too, Queen are posting me a replacement to glue back.

The latest models, in Zebrawood and Micarta have a different style of shield, it is stamped stainless rather than raised whitemetal, the new shield is said to be pinned. You can see the single pinning hole on the inside of the brass liners. Can't see this on my mini lockback but I've heard 'elsewhere' that they are pinned. Same with GEC knives, but I can see the pin on them. Shield pin is usually smaller than the slab pins.

Thanks, Will

Thanks for you efforts Frank. Like Will, I have heard that Queen is pinning their shields again.

A few years back, I found a Queen D2 Mtn. Man without handles; I don't recall the distributor but apparently Queen had offered up some complete knives without covers. I used some mammoth ivory found on an Alaskan beach by a friend and lined the covers with some rust colored fiberboard. Hope you enjoy seeing it!

Great Goodness Gracious!
You did a fantastic job. That is one handsome knife.

Fantastic! Why would you carry anything else? Oh, yeah, it's because we're knifeknuts.
