A Thief Among Us

Craig, when they catch the guy, I hope you'll post his name. The jerk deserves to be publicly humiliated -- kinda like the way that the names of convicted sex-offenders and drunk drivers are printed in some local newspapers.

I agree with steven f!

UPS had better change the way they operate that system.

Craig,

We've been through some other ugly situations in the past which resulted in the good, bad and ugly forum being created. I'm not a lawyer but it would certainly sound like you've got your ducks lined up to a point where a simple post in that forum addressing the alleged perp in direct language which sticks to the facts you have that asks the individual to comment would not be actionable against you and would provide a service by making the name public.

Please both give this notion some thought and sanity check that libel issues wouldn't be raised. I for one would like to know as I want nothing to do with cretins like this.

I can't release any names until the guy has been contacted and investigated for one simple reason: what if his identity had been stolen by a troll who makes his living mining the UBB sites (of which Bladeforums is only one) for situations to exploit. Then, I'd feel terrible about raising questions publically. I don't think this guy would ever recover, and if he wasn't guilty, I think he'd have cause to sue me (besides, I could never live with myself if it had been a case of identity theft).

Now, to answer Matt's question about secure servers: whenever you use your credit card over the internet, make sure you see a "lock" at the bottom of your screen, or make sure your url begins with "HTTPS" instead of "HTTP." This ensures that your credit card is being transmitted securely and that it isn't able to be captured by anybody but the intended recipient. Now, any computer knuts out there should feel free to correct me on the finer detailes of this.

Posting an ALLEGED criminal's name is foolish. Until and unless he is proven guilty, he is INNOCENT. That is the way justice works in this country.

Walt

Walt is correct. But passing true info is not a problem.Nor,is it unlawfull. Be prepared to prove it. You have the burden.
Burn the vermin.

Craig / Walt:

I had understood that things had progressed to the point where there was no question as to who had done the deeds... hence my suggestion that in addition to the regular legal stuff offline, sharing the ID here would be a service.

Walt you've known me long enough that for me to make such a suggestion, some prerequisites had to be satisfied. The only thing I was and still am fuzzy about is the question of libel until everything is a matter of public record.

Hey Craig. I just got off the phone with my bank. Someone got my card number too. They ran it up about 700 dollars in J Crew and Western Union and a couple more. The purchases were made in MA and VA but I haven't got info on where it was sent to. Bummer.

Walt is correct, as usual.
When I was in the Paras, we knew how to deal with thieves. Hang the M.F. Hang him by the balls. Make him pull an akio up and down the halls.

I'm glad to see we're on the same sheet of music. Yes, until the guy is convicted or admits to me his guilt, I'll remain silent.

Welcome back, Craig, glad things went well in Nepal.

Sorry to hear your credit card was usurped. We get about two fraudulent transactions per day and I'm able to catch 99% before they go out the door.

The FBI, Secret Service, Police and credit card processors could care less because the merchant pays for fraudulent transactions, not the card holder or bank or credit card processor. I quit reporting fraudulent transactions a long time ago. Nobody cares. That's why we quit taking international orders. We were losing our shirt to fraud.

Credit card fraud will continue until the legal system decides to go after frauds. I don't see that happening in the near future. Take care.

As it should be, Craig. I don't think anyone was ever suggesting that the person's name be made public before his guilt was a matter of legal certainty.

That's a shame, Fred. Fortunately for me (if you could say that) it was me as the card holder that was frauded, so I don't have to pay.

Craig and Berkley:

Guess where the merchandise the thief bought with my card went to?

Do I need to say it? OK, GARDEN GROVE, CA!

For anyone who would like to help the legal system, or at least a small part of it, become interested in online credit card fraud against knife knuts, Inv. Binh NGUYEN is the Garden Grove, CA Police Dept's investigator of high-tech frauds. He can be reached at

Say, Otto-

Isn't Garden Grove IN Orange County? How would you feel about doing a little leg-work? Nothing black-bag,

just checking out Brookhaven St. for a house getting ALOT of packages, or a UPS or other parcel driver who lives on the street. I'm sure the local constabulary would appreciate the help.

Be Worthy

I can not believe that nothing has been done about this guy yet. If he were in my neck of the woods, he would have been ferreted out already.

I'd be out there in my Ghille suit (no, it isn't for trade for a Battle Mistress) waiting for the guy to get his next package.
