In my view, the "Bowe knife" in the US was our early 19 Century equivalent of the European Small Sword in society.

The advent of practical belt or pocket size revolvers (and pepper box pistols) obviated the need for a major fighting blade as a primary personal weapon.

That is how I see it anyway.

I am not an aficionado of Bowe knives today; too much there for what I need to do. My EDC is a Leatherman Wave.

But by all means, enjoy the world of knives in whatever way it brings you joy.
 
A little off topic but have you ground either side of the guard down? Or even considered it?

Cheap is crap.
Inexpensive can be fine within its limitations.
My Frost's of Sweden "Swedish Army Knife" is one of my favorite users.
