Way out here in the frozen North West we have a small group of knife nuts who meet once a month to show and tell and do a little trading. Last month I announced I was looking for older Schrades, and had some real nice knives to offer. This month here is the result; some additions for my collection with little pain. Some nice knives I was no longer interested in (one man's treasure) in return for these nice examples!

The Cut. Co. jack has a model and salesman's number on the back, and is unused, if a little shelf-worn. There is a spot of corrosion on the back but I think I'll leave it alone. The others are also minty, if not mint (is there a difference? another thread maybe!).
Can someone please direct me to the info/thread on the 896k handle? I know it has been discussed, but couldn't find the thread. This is my first example of the breed. Thanks to all who linger here!!

Thanks Codger, lots of information there! So it's K-Horn. The pattern number is on the front, so I'm guessing it is a later made knife. Is that true? Can you narrow the time frame with that info?
SCHRADE over U.S.A. 896K is how it reads, if the pic is not clear. Thanks!

Just going by the catalog appearances, I see it last appearing in 1981, discontinued along with most of the rest of the open stock knives during the early eighties. You already know that your knife is post 1973, so there is a eight or nine year timeframe in which it was produced. I don't really recall when the pattern number went from pile to mark side.

Thanks Codger! The time window is certainly sufficient. It would be interesting though, if someone knew when the pattern numbers moved; sorta like a mile marker!
It probably happened over time, pattern by pattern, to save a step.

This came along with the trade. I know it's a little late, but I thought you folks who collect the memorabilia might like to see it!

Nice K Horn Charlie.
Those are sweet knives. I got one in a trade last year and was very pleased.

Thanks for sharing Waynorth ...

Yet another enlightening post and knowledge transfer provided by Codger...

That said, please enlighten further and expand upon the second knife from the right.. Tang close-up would be nice as well (he don't ask for much, do he !!)....

In closing, and at the risk of starting another - - - well - - - - won't even go that far.... I'm sure all can remember past threads relative to certain "ornamentation"....

Still, I am envious of your "Christmas Ornament" !!!!

regards,

dannyb

I know the story of the green balls. I'm sure several of you do as well.

The budding and grafting knife has an ivory budder on it with black cell handle. #1694B.

So you all have me intrigued about the "green ball" story! C'mon, 'fess up!!
Thanks for the number on the B&G Codger!

Here is where the green ones came from...Christmas 1998 SMKW catalog offer:

I also have a white one in the exact same package, but with a slightly different design and no date:

Does anyone have this issue they can scan for a clearer copy? This is a scan of a zerox a member sent me a while back.

Thanks Michael..... Read my mind on the material make-up of the "beaver-tail" - spatula!!! Well !! Didn't know how else to describe it :o

Anyway - now I know....

Waynorth... Use your imagination... Think of this group, late night and quite possibly way more than a "smidgen" of "drown Roy-e-yal"...

EVERYBODY was talkin' bout their " " !!!!

Entertaining reading.

Now, if I can do this correctly, check out this thread:

Or, one could do a general search for "balls"....

Just don't ask about "socks" .... or "Ping Pong Balls"....

Ain't we a site !!!

God Bless Our Soldiers !!!

dannyb

This is the only noteworthy one I traded, fireman!

It's a Stan Shaw. It covered almost the whole trade!!

I proudly purchased my 896K with my Grandfather in a small Kentucky hardware store. I don't recall what year it was but that it was my greatest summer. I still have this great knife and never really realized how special it is. I am a new member and appreciate the body of knowledge here. Thanks

Welcome! I proudly purchased the one at the top of this thread from Waynorth. I have another one that is the cousin to it, the Butter and Molasses.

Is yours K-Horn or Butter and Molasses. They are both gorgeous handles.

Is that 896K butter and molasses in delrin? How does it look compared to celluloid if it is?

The K-horn is not as shiny, nor translucent, like "butter and molasses" celluloid. The cell is much prettier, but the K-horn is reputed to be much more stable and tough.

Thanks Waynorth. Can you tell me the collector value of the delrin one?

Navihawk, recent sales are all over the map. $45 to $125 depending on who is buying. Thawk can possibly add to my vague opinion??
Hawks everywhere:D!
