i make no excuses for my irrational dislike of the trapper pattern:eek: i always manage to get gifted one, while i appreciate the gifts i dont carry or use them so ive been forwarding them (save one special one) to a knife nut buddy of mine that loves 'em, in return he sent this little Moore Maker, pretty green bone, carbon steel... and ive actually been carrying the little guy, suppose i finally found a trapper i like:)
Also included my Case Amberbone stockman that i redyed using RIT "Wine" dye, turned out really nice but man, panicked freak out doing a CV knife and what it does to the steel, even taping it up etc. Not for the faint of heart:D
hope y'all had a great holiday

WOW! That red turned out nice. Looks more like the true 'red' of some of Case's older knives. Too many of the newer 'red bone' handles look more like pink these days.

Nice work Gene.

That green MM trapper looks good too, especially in the smooth bone. Looks like it'd be very comfortable in-hand.

Great work on the dye job Gene. That stockman looks really nice! You have planted an idea in my head.

I've been eyeballing that Moore Maker for a while, I liked the long pulls and green bone glad you like it, it's going on my list, if I'm not mistaking its made by Bear & Sons.

I agree the red turned out great!

My question is....what is the brass piece? A small hand cannon? How do the percussion caps work in it?

Its a brass black powder measure. The lines give you a measure of the volume, its pulls down or slides up in the tube. Some are plain some are fancy. Mine has a hole in the ball for a leather thong or cord.

like 300 bucks said its my brass powder measure and an old tin of caps came with my new/old .50 cal CVA Hawkens, got a box with assorted BP supplies, threw a few in to liven up the photos! my friend has been shootin BP since '74, managed to score a gently used hawkens for me and gifted it to me this year, super excited to go shooting at friendship this spring. I dont buy knives for myself anymore so i figured i'd change the look of one of my edc favs
Thanks So much for the compliments

actually i believe canal street and queen also produced knives for Moore Maker in addition to Bear, this one is marked CS on the pile side
F&F is very nice on this one, though the scales are mismatched, not a deal breaker to me but some people get irked by it

I'm 99% sure that model is Bear & son if you check out Bear & sons catalog you can find the same knife, just different scales, the CS on the tang is for carbon steel. Mismatched scales never bother me, mine are all users and when are you looking at both sides at the same time, you get two different scales to look at, blade play on a new knife is what I don't like,
I like the green if you get a chance post a pick of the other side. Congrats and your dye job looks great on the other.

doh, stitch yer probably right but the price for a bear & sons is steep... the simple long pulls without swedges shouldve been my clue
ive paid less for some of my case knives for less than for what my buddy paid for it...
All things considered its a great knife, he bought it in person when he was in texas on a work trip a year or so ago, so maybe he cherry picked it

I like it, the green scales are nice & 3" is a nice pocket carry, Moore Maker has good customer service, I have a Queen made stockman that came with play in three blades sent it back and had a new one no questions asked in about a two week or less turn around.

Wow! I otta try to do a dye job myself, that is darn good-lookin'!

be warned the dye will wreak havoc on the CV or carbon steel, gave me a moment of panic... some rather diligent polishing and its almost back to normal although i did lose its natural patina that had developed
good luck

Thanks for the explanation, 300 and Gene. An old Hawkens...very cool! I hope you work in some photos of the Hawkens and Friendship somehow;)

Those are two knives to be proud of. I love the translucent green of the MM. How'd you dye the Case Red Bone? I'd like to try that on my Case "Pink" bone knives. lol

RIT Wine Dye powder and really hot water, i used about 1/2 pack to dye this and some bone beads (not boilin, didnt have the nerve to do that) water:eek: yeah its drastic but i had the dye and thought what the heck! shield stayed put even, no real dye transfer after the initial rinse, either with water or subsequent waxing, etc.
so i'll chalk it up as a success even with the panicked carbon steel freak out i had:)
Alot of people use fiebings oil dye (leather) with great success, and i believe its less stress on your knife but i didnt want to buy the fiebings so i used what was on hand
good luck if ya try it

Thanks. So you just put the entire knife in the hot dye solution and it rinsed off the metal parts? I'll try it. I have a peanut, medium trapper and medium stockman in Case red bone. I hope they turn out as nice as yours.

yep do a search in maintenance, a few guys have tutorial threads with picts on doing it. that being said i taped up mine to try to protect the metal as much as possible but the RIT dye is corrosive so you will get weird/funky looking staining of the blades. if i remember the other threads correctly they were all stainless, no mention of the CV staining
take care with it and good luck

Both nice and the dye job at least to my middle aged eyes looks akin to old red bone:thumbup:! Good job!

Nice dye job. I was about to dye one of my S&M yellow, but may switch to wine now.
