Astronomy Picture of the Day usually provides views from space. Today they have one of their more spectacular views from a far corner of the Earth itself -- Utah. :)

The explanation of the scene also explains why I posted it here:

"The cave was briefly lit by flashlight during the long exposure. Astrophotographer Wally Pacholka reports that getting to the cave to take this image was no easy trek. Also, mountain lions were a concern while waiting alone in the dark for just the right exposure."

Interesting concept.

...and on that ring:

"This archaeological site is not on the official maps. The trail is treacherous and not easy and the site is not protected from vandalism. There is a good chance you won't meet a soul on the trail and at the ruins.
Hiking along the canyon top is not for the faint of heart,..."

Man, thats amazing. What a natural shelter too!

Thats so amazing....WOW. Thanks Esav, I just set it as my background. Gene

I want to know how they did a long exposure without the stars moving, which means they had to track their movement, and kept the cave in there so well. I'm not questioning the photo as a fake or anything, just want to know how they did it.

Thanks for that! I saved it for my wife to see as well. She loves that kind of thing immensely.

Very cool. Amazing shot. Everyting must have been just right to get that pic. I could be pretty comfy in that cave as long as the mtn lions stayed at bay:eek:

That's incredible, thanks for sharing. I've been using that site for my desktop wallpapers for years now, but I hadn't seen that one yet.

This one replaced my last wallpaper as well. When I first saw it, I couldn't focus on what it was, I thought for a moment it was one of their off-world spectacular paintings.

Yes, it's true. Anyone who ventures outdoors in Utah is eaten by lions.

I know. That's why the population is still so low. :p

Thats really inspiring stuff....The only thing that sucks about it is that it isn't a first hand memory.

Yeah, you have to go out and make your own first hand memories. :)

under the sun or under the stars
following the plow or gazing at mars
get up and go from where you live
and see what the world has got to give

I want to know how they did a long exposure without the stars moving,

I think you can use an exposure several minutes long before the stars get noticeably elongated. With the camera set to high sensitivity one minute might be long enough. Starlight is pretty bright when the sky is clear.
