I say this is related to survival because well it is , just not the oh dam Im in an emergency situation type survival we usualy think about

He came from an extreme situation , was being father to his little brothers and sisters at 4 yrs old , saw his family split into 4 different foster homes , and other stuff ....

he went thru the usual gammit of stuff kids do in this position , hate rebelion , depression etc ... but he has always enjoyed watching me making knives , and messing with the materials himself .. cutting up steel and " handle wood" ( thats the firewood I think is too interesting looking to burn )

a couple weeks ago , he dug out a blade he began ages ago finished his first complete knife .

there is some serious thinking behind it too , he shaped the blade afer the traditional aboriginal stone knives we found ( I camp at the same spots my people have since before " settlement" so we find a lot of this kind of stuff )

The handle is a piece of wood we found in the desert while we were tripping around . That it came from such an isolated place seemed to mean a lot to him when he chose it .

I call this a survival knife , not because it can be used in a survial situation , but it marks a milestone in a kids life where he has turned around from a self destructive course , and chosen a positive constructive course instead for himself . To me , its kind of a marker that shows this kid has the spark in him it takes to survive and do well

I would have moved this to the new Outdoor Gear, Survival Equipment & More forum, but the story of how he came to do this, and the design and materials, make it a lesson in living with the land.

Best wishes for his continued adaptability! :)

Looks like the kid has a future in knifemaking. Maybe someday we'll see them for sale on the forum.

And thanks to you for taking him under your wing.

Great story and a nice knife. Glad to see he has gotten some positive focus.

Attached is a knife I sketched out and had ML Knives make for me. Very similar.

I have pictures of one knife we found .thats all , it just happens that we dont have the camera out most of the time , this one actualy I think we found by accident , we picked up a bunch of rocks near coober pedy that are what was most prized for cutting tools , and this came along too , usualy we will look at the things and put them back where we got them .
It was unusually like the tip of a modern hunting / skinning type knife in profile
