Reminds me of a hike I took last spring with my girls in a local woods. It was a moist windy day, and we had some ramen to cook up. I decided to show/practice some fire skills. I tried Plan A: ferro rod and wood shavings - 
nada, Plan B: ferro rod and sisal - 
zilch, Plan C: ferro rod and Mg shavings with sisal and wood shavings - :grumpy: bubkis, and finally Plan D: a Bic lighter on the sisal then the shavings on top 
. My wife and girls were cracking up and called me Plan D for the rest of the day 
. It's a good thing I was equipped for up to plan M 
.
